Nest Boxes - Paint?

I am building nest boxes for my 12 chicks and I am wondering whether I have to paint them. The boxes will be made of plywood and pine boards. Is paint an absolute necessity? Is it just recommended or is it just a nice esthetic thing to do?

You don't HAVE to paint them on the inside or out, but if they're out side nesting boxes (built to protrude outside the hen house) then painting them on the outside would be a good way to seal the wood and help prevent it from rotting.
