Nest boxes!

Hi!

I'm starting to build my coop and was wondering about the nest boxes. I have seen pictures of the boxes with a bar in front like for them to stand on? Is that what it is for? Is it necessary to have the bar? Thanks so much!

My parents built a coop almost 8 years ago. There are some flaws to it but hey it works.

The set of nest boxes are about a foot off the ground and don't have a bar on the front. They do have a little ledge on the front though about 3 or 4 inches wide. It seems to work pretty well. At least we haven't had any problems with it.
