I have 5 reds , how many nests should I have for laying?

The rule is about 1 for every 4 birds. SO you should have about 2 or 3.

we have 6 nests for 11 chickens, but I hear that sometimes they will all try to use one nest, and I think that I reads somewhere that 1 nest for each 3/4 chickens is enough.

i have lik 8 nest boxes for only 18 hens!

Yes, it's 1 nest box for every four chickens. But, just because you are part of this particular forum... make more than you need..... you'll certainly be adding more chickens in the future and you'll already have the nest boxes ready!

It is funny how you can have tons of nest boxes for your chickens and they will all choose to use the same one or two.

One nest box for every 3/4 chickens is good. I have one box for every 3 chickens. Once in a great while two chickens will decide to use the same box at the same time, and other boxes maybe empty.
