Lol that was my first guess but until the picture you posted I figured I was wrong because I’m still learning about poultry myself (though I suspect I will ALWAYS be learning)

You may be right. This is what I went with for their first set up. They just now started laying and it’s my first flock, so no older hens to show them the ropes. They’ve been laying on the coop floor in the shavings. Once I do my weekend clean routine I’m gonna change it up and try just the shavings in my boxes. Truth is, I’ve never seen them even investigate their boxes, even when I just had a bit of straw in them. They always have had wooden training eggs in them too.
