Nesting box height

Greetings & Salutations. Welcome.

We have one coop with 3 on the floor and 3 above those. No hen has used the ones on top, since they have been in the coop, 26 months. When we built the second coop, they were built on the floor. All chickens are standard size.

This is a wonderful site on which to Learn and enjoy. We are pleased to have you in the community.

I did mistake to mention that my copper will be elevated off the run floor. Obviously ease of cleaning. That i forgot to say . So maybe that helps in some responses what I'm trying to figure out. Whether they should be on the floor of the raised coop or elevated 12-18 inches inside the raised coop. Sorry for lack of info. I don't feel they would be less likely to get poop in them if elevated but would be easier to build during coop build as an extention to the coop floor.

It's actually not easier to clean an elevated coop in my experience. I would only ever recommend a walk-in style coop. With poop boards.

If you have already begun the build, there is no reason not to just extend the coop floor but put a significant lip between the coop and the nest box floor to retain nesting material and make sure they are tall enough for the hens to stand to lay the egg. Also make the access door from the exterior drop down under the roof overhang of the nest box vs. raising the roof of the nest box. The second style is notorious for leaking into the coop/nest box.
 
Welcome. I have some at 6-inches, some at 12-inches, I have a few cat houses I use as nesting boxes because standard nesting boxes are too small for my big Australorps. In any case, it doesn't matter, they will all want to lay in the same one and the others will yell and scream waiting even though there are 4-5 other boxes open. :)

Hahaha lol! The one that is occupied is the one they all want! They act about like kids!😅
