Hello all:
I am new here to the BYC site;however, glad i found it and joined. I just finished my coop and run. I finished it and just used commin sense for the nesting box dimensions. I never bothered to verify the standard nesting box dinlmension. What i ended up with is 3 boxes at 14" deep, 10" wide and 12 inches tall. I also didnt slope the top of the nesting boxes. I have 3 buff orpingtons and 2 barred rocks (5 weeks old)who will obviously grow. Will these nesting boxes be enough for a grown buff or barred rock? Thanks in advance for input

Oh boy that's small for a BO and BR... 18 inches at least for such large birds.... Mine are all 18x18x18... The smaller breeds get milk crates, they're about 13x13x13.... I have 5 gallon buckets sideways with the end cut off for the banties...

I don't know that a BR would squeeze into such a small space... Mine won't, anyway lol ;)

Gotta be able to turn around in there, and BRs get BIG butts ha-ha :D

emojione/assets/png/1f609.png?v=2.2.7[/IMG] you can't guess at what you don't know. Not slanting the top of the nesting boxes means they WIlL sit on top and disturb the mommies in there . I would redo that with a slope , also if the box is too small your going to have lots of trouble getting them to lay in them , take them down and start over we all make mistakes ,

Mine aren't slanted, but they sit in shelves on top of each other, so a slant wouldn't make a difference anyway...but yeah good point, if they're the top nesting box, a slant keeps other hens from bouncing up on top of the boxes and bugging the layers :D

Thanks for the advice, i just retrofitted the nest boxes. I increased them to 11.5" high, 14 feet deep and 14.5 inches wide. I went with two boxes only as opposed to three. My coop is pretty small basically a 4x3 but the run is pretty big.

Both nests i just put together are 14" wide and deep the height however is 11.5" do you think this is still too small. I have read that too much room gives them an opportunity to poop or crush eggs.
