nesting box question

i have 8 hens and i am getting ready to build them new boxes. before i just used milk crates(3) and raised them up. they only would use 1. now i am thinking about making 1 box but the same length as 3 boxes would be. so it would be 1' x 1' x 3' with a perch out front. has anyone tried this before? what are some opinions? thanks for your output, Krista

Mine seem to like smaller, dark nest boxes. Even though I have 5 boxes, they only ever use 2.
