Nesting box size

Do you cut the bucket to make openings, or just take off the lid?

Pictures I have seen have just been a 5 gallon bucket laying on its side, with a couple of blocks to keep it from rolling.

How tall did you make them to have a lip that tall? I think I want mine like that-with a tall lip. We're going to use rubbermaid dish tubs as nest box liners and if I have the tall lip, I don't have to cut the tubs in the front.

The hole they enter needs to be at least 6" tall though I usually use 8". How high the actual top on the nest needs to be depends on how you frame it. Mine wound up about 16" tall.
