We have got three Wyandottes....first one started laying and she went into the coop to lay but didn't use her nesting box. This is OK. We went on vacation for a week an had the neighbors keep an eye on the girls. The second started laying while we were gone and layed 3 eggs, but not in the coop, under the gas meter. Not Ok.
When I saw she was getting ready to lay again I locked her in the coop and she went in a total frenzy trying to get out. .... for 3 hours. .... when I finally gave up and let her out she ran right over and layed an egg under the gas meter again.
I'm going to build a different style box, put it by the gas meter and another identical box in the coop. .. Any other ideas?
