I am debating between adding in a nesting box to the coop or not. What is the purpose of a nesting box? Should I add one for each chicken?

Nesting boxes are where they lay their eggs. You do not need a box for every bird.

I have 1 for every 4 birds and they make out fine. I used old plastic milk crates mounted on hooks with straw in them. Very easy to clean out...

I'm sure they may lay on the ground for you, but you might have better luck with some boxes for them. Mine are just 18 x 12 x 15 deep. Put a lip on them about 2" so you can put some shavings or straw in there. If you get real creative, you can make them slant back a little so the eggs roll in the back and don't get stepped on or pecked at.

Just found this about 10 posts down...
