Nesting boxes - they are done pictures added

There was a lot of quacking and complaining going on last night. They were really upset about it. I figure they will be fine after a couple of hours of staring at it. Plus there is a baby night light in the duck house. I've read that it is good to have one box for every two girls. So that was my math, we will see if it pays off. They are not laying yet, but boy did they all try to sleep in the single nest I had set. BTW it was very easy to build. All I needed was a zigzag saw to cut the wood and a drill to drill the countersink holes. I even curved the corners so they don't get hurt when they freak over something. I think I spend about 20 dollars on material for it, including the pans. The large wooden frame does not have a floor, just the kiddie litter pans in it. That way I can hose it off, if it gets nasty. So the verdict is in. While they are not yet laying, they surely used all of them to sleep in. So that is good. Lets hope they will use them for laying eggs down the road. All boxes do have training eggs in them, so there is a hint for the girls.

I have spoiled little monsters. I've build 4 nesting boxes for the 8 girls, because they all tried to sleep in the one I had. So now they haul into the duck hosue in the evening and almost fight over the nests. They all want to sleep in one. Now I have to go to the hardware store and get more lumber for 4 more boxes. Then everyone has its own nesting bed, and the drake gets the old box. It is so funny to see them in the row of nesting boxes. The dividers are not that high so they can look at each other. Apparently they like.

another thing that works great are the yellow kitty litter pails! Just remove the part of the lid that you open and close and then the other part is the front so eggs do not roll out, fill with bedding/litter and place in corners up against the wall with a brick to they don't move. They are a little small sometimes for larger ducks, chickens but work great and give them some privacy. Then when they are dirty etc. a good hosing and you can recycle them and put a new one in.

That's kind of what I did. I've got the small kiddie pans at walmart for 2.50 each and build the wood frame with dividers around it. The wood frame has no floor so I can also rinse it with the hose. So far it works great. I use the kiddie poo scoop to empty the dirt out of the pans and simply top it back off with pine shaving. I've also could have used dish washing pans for about the same price, but they were deeper and I wanted it easy for them to get in.
