Nesting boxes

My coop came from a family friend so came with built in (nesting boxes that screw into a wall that can't be accessed from outside) there are 6 of them and have a roof (so it looks like kind of like a barbie house) and is up off the floor like 24" give or take. My hens (the one that is laying and 4 others won't go in them (even after added some nesting pads and golf balls that had at home) the one laying will lay in the corner behind then roosting bar or in front of the boxes but on the floor or out in the run (still laying only 1-3 a day). She started laying before we got them out of our temporary coop/pen that didn't have nesting boxes. I'm wondering if need to lower them to the floor or at least closer to the floor or hope if another starts laying she will go in? They face the back wall so (to me ) they are dark inside and even when the door is open when they are in the run they seem in the dark to me but maybe they are not dark enough? Or do I need to remove them and go with like milk crates or litter buckets instead? Here's pics of the current nesting boxes (pic 3 is with the flash pic 4 is without flash to show how dark during the day) last pic is where she has been laying behind roosting bar.

Try to make 2 of them comfy, more shady with a fake egg in it. Maybe some kind of curtains may help. A real curtain, a piece of a fly curtain or add some ropes on a slat. Hens like to see what is going on outside the nestbox but like to be hidden too.

Btw: For 5 hens you only need 2 nest boxes.

I have some fabric lying around I will measure and make some for a couple and see if that helps. We have been placing her in it at night but she just quickly gets out.

Better not. Its easier to clean if the chickens roost at night.

The roost should be higher than the nest boxes. Most chickens like to sleep as high as possible.
Maybe you need to close the higher nestboxes.

Where are roosts relative to the nests heightwise? Can we get further back shots showing the layout of the coop?

As BDutch noted nests are for laying in, there's zero reason to be encouraging a hen to go in there at night under normal circumstances.

I'm confused by that. Is she laying between 1 and 3 eggs each day or one egg every three days? Or maybe something else.

There is nothing wrong with those nests, either how they are made or the height. People have been using nests like that for a long long time. If you want, you can modify some or provide other nests but you get no guarantee that it will change anything.

Chickens are living animals, they will do what they want. Sometimes we can influence them but it does not always work. So what can you do?

It sounds like she has made her nest where she wants it. How bad of a place is that? Is she OK continuing to lay there? If you are OK with that, what is your problem?

You might try building a nest and putting it in that spot. If that makes the spot OK, good. If not, try moving that nest a foot or so toward your main nests every 3 or 4 days after she gets used to using it. This does not always work but a lot of the time she will follow the nest. When you get her back to the area of your main nests and she is used to that area, remove the nest and see if she uses one of yours.

You can modify one of your nests so you can lock a hen in there. Then when you catch her on her nest laying an egg catch her and lock her in the real nest until she lays that egg. That may mean chasing her down with a net. This is what I do but I'm retired so I can catch her on her nest when she is laying. Usually I only have to do this once and she makes the switch.

Some people say they have had success by blocking off the area where she is laying to force her to find a new nest. I've never had any luck trying that, she just lays next to whatever I put there.

My nests are available well before they start to lay and I use fake eggs. I have hens that are laying in those nests so the pullets have someone to show them where to lay. You don't have that yet but the vast majority of my pullets start laying in the real nests. It will get better for you.

Are they normal eggs? Firm hard shells with no strange markings on them? Some hens will release two or (on really rare occasions) three yolks on the same day so they can lay more than one egg a day. Most that do this only do it rarely but some can do it more often, especially when they first start laying. Sometimes it takes a while for a pullet to get the glitches out of her system. This is how double yolked eggs are made if the yolks released are timed pretty close together.

Most pullets and hens only make enough shell material for one egg a day. Usually if a pullet or hen lays more than one egg in a day the second one is very thin shelled or may not have a shell at all. Also, eggs spend a lot of time in the shell gland as that shell material is applied. With two eggs sharing the shell gland they often leave marks on each other. Sort of flat and wrinkled marks.

If you are getting two or three eggs a day regularly and those eggs are normal then you almost certainly have more than one pullet laying.

All of hers have been hard shelled but I tiny compared to store bought or even the eggs we had been getting from a Mennonite chicken farmer. We have only cracked 3 of her eggs and they were some of her first ones. Most days she only has one but we've had days since started laying Aug 5th. Yesterday no eggs and so far today no eggs. When she lays it might be around 10-1030 in the morning and then if we got a 2nd it would be late afternoon. The one or two times we got 3 they would be there at evening. There has been 2 eggs (different days week or 2 apart) that had a crack so had to toss.
