What do you use for nesting boxes for Red Golden pheasants? Mine have a indoor pen and then outdoor runs--I just don't know what type of boxes to build for them or if they will use the standard "chicken" type

I use bushel baskets,a piece of plywood leaning on the side of the pen and a xmas tree.Give them choices and let them pick their spots.

My pheasants have a choice of regular chicken nesting boxes, piles of brush, and plastic 35 gallon barrels cut in half. My hens lay everywhere. It depends on where the hen feels most safe and sometimes lays when she has the urge. I find most of the eggs in the nests and under the barrels if that helps at all. In the corners of the coop and behind the feed bags is another popular spot.
Set up a few nesting spots and see where your hens like it the most.

Tony, how do you set up the Christmas Trees for the birds, I have been collecting a few over the last few days and was just wondering how you set them up in your pens.

I Just stand them up leaning into a corner. You cam lay them down and they will crawl into the middle, but they don't like to come out very much.Another down side to trees is their tails get all straggley looking, but the birds seem to like the cover that they provide.I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it.

Our Golden pheasants use a variety of nesting places.
1. We place pine branches or christmas trees in the pen for them to nest under on the ground.
This photo is some of our Ringneck breeding pens, but shows the pine trees & branches.

2. We place half of a plastic kennel crate in the pen for them to nest under.

3. We have plastic tubs hung under the shelter of the pen at various heights to nest in.

4. Our pens also have a plastic dog house which is where the feed is, some hens will nest in there.
This photo was taken before the nesting tubs were hung in the pen, but you can see the dog house.

I was wondering if they would use the plastic barrels--i took some of the 55gal and cut them in half lenghtwise. They do like to "rest" in there during the day but I wasn't sure if the hens would take them over as as nesting spot. I'll set some other stuff up too so they have some choices.

thanks for the suggestions!

Mine seem to like the rubbermaid tubs, turned upside down with no lid, with a entrance hole cut out. Cheap and easy to use . My ducks like them too.
I always try and pick up the green ones when they have a sale at WAL.
