How many hens will use a 1'x1'x1' box? Should they be larger for multiple hens?

Anyone use 5 gallon buckets on their sides? How many do you use for how many birds?

i made mine 16"x16"x16"

I have three 1'x1' boxes for my five hens; most of the time they only use two of them (the corner boxes).

I have seen two of my big buff orpingtons squeeze into the same box

but if a box is being used, they'll wait or use another one.

How many boxes should you have. I will have 25-30 chickens. I know they all don't lay at the same time or every single day and of course, I will be collecting my eggs everyday. How nesting boxes should I build for my girls?
