Is there a particular reason why my hens won't sleep in the nest? Do the just get in there when they are ready to lay eggs?

Chickens poop while they sleep; therefore, it is a good thing that they do not sleep in the nest box.

Hens tend to sleep in the highest point of the coop (most likely the roost) Contrary to popular belief chickens prefer to sleep on a perch or roost and the only use the nest to lay eggs in. This is a good thing as no one likes eggs covered in poop. Make sure to have lots of roost space for your hens as a happy hen makes yummy eggs.
