nesting hens

yes, they might be broody. Are the eggs fertile? If they are truely broody they will lay their clutch then sit and stop laying eggs. Our hen started sitting like crazy everyday we went out to collect eggs and she was sitting on them. We just took them out from under her and the next day same thing she sitting again. So instead of breaking her little chicken heart by taking her eggs away everyday we bought her some fertilized eggs so she can sit. (We don't have a rooster). We've had chickens for many many years and she is the first one that went broody.
