nesting material

What kind of material should I put in the nesting boxes? Wood shavings like bottom of coop? Hay? Straw? Does it matter

You will get a myriad of answers on this one. I cut carpet samples to fit the bottom of the box for cushioning, then I put in straw. I just like the looks of a straw nest box than i do the wood chips i use on the floor. Don't think it matters to the hens....
