I tried straw in the nest boxes, but my young girls who aren't laying yet, will roost and poop in them. The straw was too hard to clean out, so I use pine shavings, deep litter method in my coop and in the nest boxes. It really absorbs and keeps the odor down, the bad side is I have to carry it to the back pasture and my husband burns it. I daily scoop big poop out and use that in the compost pile.
