If it's dried first I think it would be fine--Free is good! I didn't mean that to come across poorly. I kept getting a visual of bunches of hatchling snakes coming out from where I dumped a couple bags of grass clipping when the lawn had gotten too long to use the mulching attachment last year. I'd had no idea a bag of grass clippings would get so hot and smelly and make such an apparently perfect place for snake eggs to incubate.
 
our fav, (us and the chickens, guineas etc..) is shredded paper from a paper shedder, they dont eat it, dont scratch at at it, and it is really easy to keep clean
