nesting material

Sure, as long as your chooks like it. I prefer pine shavings. Grass and hay tend to mat down over time and is more difficult to re-fluff. Not so bad in a nest box, but definitely not great for floor litter. I use the shavings in both places. If the litter in the nest box gets soiled, I just toss it out to the "deep litter" on the coop floor.

Another thing to consider is that fresh grass clippings are likely to be eaten rather than nested in. I know mine would eat it.

try some spanish moss You would be surprised how great it is in the nest box. Its surprisingly soft My chickens won't leave the hay in the next boxes they always scratch it out all over the floor. Grass they would eat.
 
Here at the SHACK we like to use pine straw and hay.....That seems to form to our hens body a lot better helps her keep those eggs tucked under her body...but all those things work grass clippins , hay and pine shavings....
