Nets box

Does nest box need to be completely dark? My nest box is attached to back of coop and i cut boards a little short so it has about a 1/2-1-4 gap. Is that ok or does it need to be all the way closed? I can put chicken wire in it to allow a little vent in the nest box and for protection or does it need to be all the way closed up?

No it doesn't have to be dark, I cut several windows into my nest box. However you may consider putting hardware cloth over the gap if it looks too large, if it's under 1/2" I probably wouldn't but if there's any spot over 1/2" I definitely would.
