Hi,

So i have a light Sussex hen who has started going backwards randomly until she stops or hits something. She is eating well, and drinks. She seems all normal except for the backward problem.

Any suggestions?

Yes, it can be an inherited neurological issue, often the main symptom is walking backwards with the head above or underneath the body. Often triggered by drinking or eating for some reason, but some are triggered by stress, i.e. confrontations with alphas will cause them to do it, or unwanted attention from roosters.

With one case I am aware of it was due to a tick biting on the back of their neck/head. But it's quite common in some lines of poultry of various species, and it is heritable if it's that sort... But there are a few other things it could be too, disease, brain trauma/damage, toxicity for some examples.

However in this case it sounds like the hereditary form to me, since she isn't taking a few steps back but is walking backwards until stopped by something else, but of course I could be wrong.

If it's the heritable issue, well, most of them live pretty normal lives interspersed by regular or semi regular 'episodes', but it is something their offspring will almost certainly also do. Someone I knew had bred many generations of birds that did this, they didn't find anything else associated with the behavior like specific health issues, but I would expect there is because there pretty much always is something linked to it, and it'd be unwise to breed on. Neurological damage or abnormality is rarely something to be taken lightly.

Best wishes.
