Nevadans?

Good Evening Nevadan's!
My 27 chicks are all healthy and thriving still! I feel blessed, considering everyone else's casualties. I am amazed how fast the wing feathers are coming in, especially the RIR!
The wind is crazy, glad my babies are safe inside.

so your chicks are a week younger than this batch I just got. Mine are quite feathered in on the wings and the little tail feathers are coming in. I just want to get my sleeping bag and sleep out in the garage with them.

last time I brooded in the house in my office. it was sooooo dusty. I loved being close to them but the dust was horrendous. So garage this time for a few weeks then into the coop with the heat lamp.

OMG, were those in the car when they picked up eggs from me today? Awe, would have loved to see them.
But was awesome meeting Sunny and Steve in person! Such great people!

agreed! Sunny and Steve are so nice.

So beautiful! I'm soo excited for mine!!!

I was happy to see Original stand up for her faverolles. As much as they got picked on by everyone else... they were allowed to eat beside her when I put new food in. Nobody else was allowed, though some tried. For some reason, that made me feel better. If the weather is any better tomorrow, I'll let them run around for a few hours.
I feel like my kids are misbehaving over at your place even though I know it's normal chicken behavior under these circumstances.

well, I finally went to bed last night after checking on the chicks in the garage a bunch of times. They look just fine out there. They slept next to each other but didn't look huddled up like they were cold. The big girls in the coop are not thrilled with all this wind but they will be fine.

So after inquiring (again, I have told him several times but his listening skills aren't always up to par) about the various breeds of chicks we're getting this spring, my husband asked if we're getting any "big hair" chickens. He said it in Spanish but that's the gist of what it means. So digging further, he meant Polish. I showed him some pictures and he particularly likes the buff laced Polish. Well, if he had mentioned this a few months ago I could have added some to my ideal order but they are all sold out until May. So the polish will have to wait for now. Maybe Polish are the gateway chicken for his chicken addiction.

There's always chicken fever next spring. I keep reminding myself of that... if I load up now, I'll have to rehome a few when the fever strikes again! Seramas look so cool, but realistically... well, they're not going to feed my family. The whole sustainability factor is keeping me a little grounded... except for the silkies and the cochin I have coming.

I found this picture of serama chicks. Look how little!!!

I am glad the chicks got to you and are doing well

I am hoping to get one of my bantam buff laced Polish roosters in with my Polish hen soon. Hopefully I will be hatching out some chicks in May

so cute! yes, the reality check... one can only fit so many chickens in a backyard. silkies are a delicacy in china, I think. they have black skin. Cochins look fat but probably it's mostly feathers.

Well, Sheryl..sounds like you have done a better job than I could..she may just be prone to tumors..hmmm....Bread with wine and oil sounds pretty darn good!

Good luck and know that you have done everything in your power to help her..I just hate it when any animal doesn't feel right!

BTW is anyone interested in a seed swap? I'll also have nightshade plants (about 15 varieties of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) in the beginning of May. If you want to trade seeds, we could just slip them in envelopes and mail them to each other.

The lamb sounds really good. I need to wait though and see what John's great uncle from Yerington has this fall. He was a butcher there at the ranch and he usually has a few lambs we buy off of him. It's about $120 for the whole lamb and he packages everything up for us. He just can't resale it to anyone otherwise I could offer it up on here. Last year the lambs were way too small and he said it wasn't worth it so I'm really hoping this year they will be.

You cook lamb just like beef but make sure it's only rare to medium rare otherwise it will get pretty tough unless it's ground.

There's a ranch at the farmer's market who should be there to sell their beef and meats they raise themselves. I'm going to look into it this year.

As for owning part of a cow and stuff, here's the link and anyone can join in on it, I really want to. I don't believe it's illegal to bring milk back from another state though, it's done all of the time here. Sunny, I think they're some where near you?

OMG you guys!!! 90 posts in 4&1/2 days! It's gonna take me forever to catch up. Sheryl Stonehouse Ranch is who I talked to and they are the ones that said it is illegal to take it across state lines. Of course I assume that is if it is for sale and if it's not how is anyone gonna enforce that law? I doubt I will do that Stonehouse Ranch thing. They want $6 a gallon for their milk and you have to bring your own container.

I used to get it for .25 when I picked it up at the farm with my own container. Even with 800% inflation I wouldn't expect to pay more than $2 a gallon. The farm has no shipping/transport costs. Nor are they paying employee, mortgage and extra utility costs to keep a store up and running. The milk may be extra creamy (as they claim) but that doesn't justify the cost.
