Nevadans?

Knemeyer I think our chicks are 1.5 months old. We got them from Jones Feed a month ago. They did fine outside again today. I am not doing a whole lot of special things for them now that they are "big girls". I have a planter dish of water they like to stand in (it's actually a soaking pool for the tortoise) and they have a lot of shade throughout the day. They do pant and lay around during the hottest parts of the day. But once the afternoon starts to cool down, they go right to foraging.

I had to put them to bed last night inside their coop. I then had to force them out this morning because they were really enjoying their house! Again tonight, I had to place them inside the coop. I hope that at some point they will put themselves to bed!

I got chicks from them that same week, and they were probably just a few days old. They were the same size as mine that were born on the 21st. So I would say yours were probably born on the 21st or 22nd. I'm glad you mention the planter dish. I was wondering if that would be a good idea for mine. I picked up a mister kit at Home Depot for $19. It's a nice one because it came with an extender kit and the wash for the nozzles. They panted the day before we had installed the misters, but today, not a once and they were out there for the full day. You might want to consider those for the real hot days we get. I'll be doing the coop thing tomorrow night and probably for the next few days. Good luck!

Knemeyer, between carson and virginia city, i think you;ll find more at virginia. Have you ever been there before? Its really a nice place, and they usually have somthing awesome going on. If you do decide to go to VC, stop at the bbq house at the end of the main stretch, on the left side, for lunch. They have the best pulled pork sandwiches there, except the wasps always want to share.

Bloomie, lol it takes me like ten minutes to read your posts. Good luck with your broody.

Sunny, my chickens didnt run for cover. everyone was out sratching in the mud, even the silkies. Theyre all mental. We tried herdiing them in, but no such thing. In the end we left them out there, because it only rained for like a half hour here, no hail.

We got the hail. Of course it was about 2 seconds before it started coming down that we all decided to bring all the birds in. We got pelted pretty good but the birds where fine. They where more scared of the noise than anything.

The heat does not seem to be much of a problem for us. I guess we picked a great location for the runs. Lots of shade through most of the day.

We now have 5 more eggs in the incubator and 3 more in an egg carton waiting their turn. Heilo had a three day streak of laying an egg each day. I am expecting our second pullet to start laying in the next 4 weeks or so. You never know with Seramas though, they may not start laying until they are a year old.

We really need to get started on building the next two and final runs. Been to hot to do anything but think about it lately.

What a day yesterday! Thunder, lightning, wind, rain, hail, flooding and power outage.

Ran around like a crazy chicken lady getting everyone in who needed help, trying to shield them from the grape sized hail. Course not a drop fell on the fire - which I can see from my house.

Finally finished an available birds page for my BYC page: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=31162-available-birds Has pictures of most all available pullets and hatch dates.

Sunny - I do not have an EE chick the same age as the Amers. I do have chicks before and after that date, including Robin, a red/cream, who I was going to keep but am teetering on the fence with her - she has a blue hatch mate (Robin is out of my Sweet Amelia and the blue is out of my Charming Chloe). In that "clutch" is also an Orpchin (Orp roo over Cochin hen), she is what I am calling a splash white. She should be a fantastic broody - her mom is great and her dad does carry broody in his line. The pullets I do have that age are Orp/Del and a Orp/Cochin.

SparksNV - I think most of the chicks will do fine going from freerange to city living. I do have a group, who I have not even posted on the available page - they would not be happy -- their mother taught them to really, really range when they eat. She has since left her chicks on their own (still really young) and they range over 7 acres easy all alone
hmm.png
(scares me, but every evening there is still 8 chicks at dusk) Any way - this group I will keep unless someone with lots of fenced property is looking for far n wide rangers. Both the May 1st and May 19th hatch - the chicks are "close" like friend - these chicks should be laying in October. Generally it seem my chicks start laying around 5 months of age - at least my mixed breeds.

Penturner - here is a picture of my Orpington Roo Versace - hard to tell size in a photo but the container next to him is a gallon juice jug.

Ah, cars. Love me a muscle car and a good truck. Currently have a 1997 Pontiac Trans AM, V8, six speed - not exactly a chicken hauling car, but I do squeeze them in there sometimes.

Wow! I had no idea you were so far out there! That fire is at Hallelujah Junction right? Or is there another one I haven't heard about? I hope the wind is blowing all the smoke away from you!

Love that Blue! She looks a lot like the one I got from you. What a beauty! When I posted I forgot that I had tentatively ordered 2 Barnevelders from a friend (she didn't know if she would have 2 extras) so now I am up to my limit. The EExBlue orp is so pretty though! Now I'm thinking 1 over wouldn't hurt...

Yup, I am out here

I am very, very close to CA and it is between HJ and Doyle (I believe), off Costantia (sp?) Road. That mountain/hill is on the otherside of 395, we just have a great view even being in the valley - the road you see in the picture is Red Rock. I have not driven over there to get a closer look, I am just happy it is not closer.

These cockerels are in my grow-out pen and are lovely eye candy. I thought I would show them here, see if anyone is interested or knows anyone looking for a cockerel – they have a date with freezer camp, so their time is limited. Hatched March 1st or 2nd.

Two “blues” are Orp/EE boys, no beard/muff so wattles, floppy pea comb, blue/slate legs out of a faint blue/green egg. (Sunny, these are they boys you started)

The other is an Orpington, his father a Splash (Versace) and mother a buff (Buffy). He is the bottom of the pecking order (so no tail for him ) and really a sweetie to people.

I bet! Especially considering all the smoke you had to choke your way through a few years ago when we had so many fires up there!

Awwwww they are such pretty boys! They have that beautiful splash of red. Are they from Marilyn?
