CONGRATS!!!

I love IFA, a lot of it is because they do so much for 4-H and FFA. the store manager here has been a 4-H leader in Elko for probably 20 years. we just got a CAL Store about 2-3 years ago. its more of a bigger chain. i like the feed better there, our IFA doesnt carry crumble, just mash and pellets, and I and my chickens prefer crumble. I try to get anything else at IFA. its more of a country store environment, CAL seems more like a department store almost.

Thank you ShanyaLV

Buff Orpingtons are beautiful!
My heart is set on at least one Americauna, too...that elusive green egg must be mine (goes with the ham).

Much happiness,
Genie

Welcome to the Clan! Everyone is really helpful and dare I say "have great senses of humour". I am up in the Northern area but there are a lot of Southern NVer's that can help you find everything you need for your chickens.

I have been a bit absent the last couple of days because I am obsessing over my baby chicks and then I broke down last night and ordered more... I picked up some Buff Orps. I'll be sure to take some pictures when they arrive.

Glad to see everyone is still alive and doing well.

We are building our own coop, it was much cheaper for us and we can set it up exactly the way we want instead of trying to make a pre-fab work out for us.

Pre-Fab? No Way! lol. Built it ourselves, straight up from the ground. we already had built a stable, and added another wing to that to but our rabbits in. they we built another wing for the coop on the end, then 2 more wings so they would have a big yard. we are also in talks of converting the rabbit barn into an add-on for the coop, to make more room. (we dont have the rabbits anymore)

Anyway, mine is a 8' x 12' coop, probably around 5'8'' at the lowest part of the roof, about 6'5'' at the high part of the roof.

Welcome to Henderson! I, too, am another country-lovin' transplant. I'm over at Racetrack and Newport at the very southeast end of the valley.

I hate to be the wet rag here, but you may want to check with Henderson Animal Control as to the regs... Actually, you can find the info on-line. The short and nasty is (last time I checked) you can have chickens (no roosters) on any size plot of land, BUT you must have written permission filed with Animal Control from EVERY neighbor within a 350' radius of your coop (that's a total of 10 acres, btw). AND if there is ANY complaint about your chickens (noise, flies, smell) from ANYBODY, then Animal Control will come and confiscate them....no warning, no tickets (unless, of course, you're in violation of not having the neighbors' written permission, then you can be cited).

I went and talked to Animal Control about their regs....yeah, it's pretty screwed up. You can have a goat and pony farm on your little acre with no hassle, but one squawky bird and one cranky neighbor and it's gestapo time.

There's a group of folks trying to get the regs rewritten because 350' is kind of onerous. I had the blessing of all my neighbors, but one ol' biddy at 300' (well out of sight and hearing and smell of any coop) flat out stomped her feet and put the kabash on it. Animal Control thought she'd not know about them and gave a tacit blessing, but I live in a small gossipy community of small minds and big mouths and no doubt she'd get a burr under her tail and narc 'em. (She's married to an animal hater who pulled a gun on the neighbor's loose dog rather than go inside and call Animal Control or the neighbor.)

However, IF you decide to venture this and if you want hatched-eggs-selection of chicks, let me know as I love to incubate and find the challenge of mail-order eggs fun!

p.s.
Haven't seen a single 'coon or smelled a skunk since living here, but coyotes are a genuine problem and the rare and occasional bobcat or cougar.... All of which can jump fences and make off with small critters and pets. BTW, Henderson reg specifically state no free-ranging chickens... Coops are de riguer!

Both those breeds were bred for heavy production. I always got 5-7 eggs a week from mine. Don't have any BRs right now but I still have 3 RIRs (closely related to NHRs) and they are great layers (well, when they aren't molting anyway).

YaYaBugaaawkSisters, good luck with the chicken police! I'm legal (Reno has very few laws regarding chickens, they let the CC&Rs and HOAs take care of that) because we can keep what we want unless the neighbors complain. I do think I'm pushing it right now though because I have 28 chickens and 2 of them are roos.

They aren't loud roos, I only hear them about 3 times a day and so far no complaints,

but I'll be happier when we get a place out of the city. I'd love to move up to the Red Rock/Rancho Haven area, but we need to finish the renovations on this house first.
