Well it looks like somehow Petey contracted coryza. I will have to put down my whole flock.

I am really just hoping that he is somehow just suffering from a coon bite, but byc seems to think he is sick with the disease. All of his symptoms match, but a sinus infection from the attack would have close to the same effect. I am going to keep a close eye on everyone for the next week. I don't want to put anyone down if I can avoid it. We will see what tomorrow brings for Petey....

I'd never heard of it before, so I just looked it up. It's incubation period is 1-3 days and it is nasty stuff!!! Oh I'm so upset! Poor Momma, poor Aubrey! Do you think they picked it up at the new place? But you've been there more than 3 days! This doesn't make sense! It's so unfair!!!!! Oh Aubrey I wish there was something I could do!!!

I think you are right to wait. An injury from the coon attack can produce respiratory distress that presents like coryza.

Wondering if it's the polish and the Cochin I got at the swap last week.
I've done a little more research and found that most of the chickens will probobly survive the outbreak, but I will never be able to sell or give them away because they will be carriers for life. If it is what Petey has I will be giving the NNPFA a call as that's where the birds came from. I am going to buy the medicine for it tomorrow. No one else is showing signs of illness. I know it isn't the new place because this home has been in marks family for 20+ years and they never had birds.
I'm just praying it's an infection from the coon bite. If not I will have to decide if I want to keep my birds as carriers or if I will cull and be done with chickens. I think I will end up doing the first though, because they are my pets- but I will probobly have to limit my contact with you guys

Please, keep every apart from everyone else. How are the birds you got from the swap? They should be showing some distress, as stress brings it out - anything abnormal - nostril discharge, droopy eyes?



Do not kill anyone yet! Let's call the state vet on Monday, and hope Petey makes it that long - she is in Carson and probably will want to test him. We will find out about tests - I did not ask her when I talked to her almost 2 years ago (looking into NPIP).


Only care for Petey and his showgirl last, the "swap birds" just before petey.

Well if you will remember the polish for killed the day I had her. She looked very healthy. The Cochin looks healthy also. No signs of anything Petey is goin through. His surviving girl is in his box with him and she is not showing signs either.
I am very hesitant to cull anyone beause they are all very healthy looking. I'm going to start then on sulmet just in case and keep an eye on them too. I really think that if Petey were this far gone SOMEONE would have shown symptoms by now too. Also through my research I have found that if the barred Cochin was a carrier, at least one or two of my hens would show symptoms by now as they all sleep in the same coop....

I seriously doubt Petey or any of your flock has this ugly stuff, you were at my house on Wednesday and flock isn't showing any signs either, you even picked them up and they are fine. Your flock is fine too just Petey is having issues and like you said he was attacked by those rotten coons and these can be signs of that attack.

Hi everyone,
I live in San Diego CA, I spent 8 years in Las Vegas, I left in 2003. After recently becoming pregnant, I have convinced my husband to move with me back to Vegas.

I raise many types of birds for show, preservation and just for fun. I am studying for my wildlife rehab certification and use a holistic approach when treating illness and injury in my pets and rescues. I don't mind helping a friend (or friend's pet) in need and have saved my friends from many vet visits! I am excited about becoming a legit rescue.

I'd love to get to know more BYC chicken friends in the Vegas Valley like I did when I came here. I just love the people here on BYC and have made some very nice friends. I would feel a great deal more comfortable knowing I already have new friends to talk to when I move out there.

Also, maybe y'all could give me a hand in finding a place where I can have my chickens/gamebirds etc., kids and pets without trouble? Something at least 3bd and maybe a workshop for our home business would be really ideal, with a bit of land for the animals and any rescues I may have. If you might be able to point me in the right direction I'd so much appreciate it!!

Are there meetups/swaps/get togethers where everyone meets up? If so I'd love to take a drive out for one and meet fellow BYCers in the area.
