I have gotten quite a bit of flack for culling from my own flock for temperment, size, quality, etc. but I want the best and I think that if you are planning on reproducing your own birds you have to be nit-picky. Something that I am sure you and many on our NV thread would agree with.

As for the vicious RIR roos, I was blown away with this group I got, it broke my heart cause I do love red chickens

You have the right idea though, cull, cull, cull. That is the only way to improve your flock.

Genny do you know of a breeder that has heritage LF RIRs? I do love the RIRs (or the NHRs). They are such fantastic layers, I'll always have them and Orps as part of my laying program. Orps because they keep laying even in winter (well, at least a few anyway).

What is a good cooP floor for Nevada weather? it needs to be easy to clean and safe for the birds.

Hi everyone. I see I'm not getting any responses for the pot luck that's coming up August 13th and perhaps people feel a bit awkward coming to a strange place with chickens. You never know what someone will bring or take home from visiting chicken places. Sunny also messaged me as well about this so it's funny how minds think a like, so would everyone feel better if we do have the get-together at a park instead so we won't need to worry about spreading anything? I have 2 suggestions on parks, the first one is very easy to get to and has shade scattered through out - Rancho San Rafael Park off of McCarran on Sierra St. The second suggestion is Bartley Ranch which is harder to find but has tons of tables and shade and it has buildings there from all over Reno dating back to the 1,800's among other things it's around North McCarran and you would go North on Lakeside Dr. So I'm now starting a poll to ask everyone what they think about this idea?

Here is the poll, please respond with 1 if you want Rancho San Rafael Park off of McCarran or with 2 if you want Bartley Ranch or if anyone has any better idea respond with 3 and the place they are suggesting. Please remember August 13th is during Hot August Nights and downtown will be crowded with people and it would make it harder to find us all. I won't start because I'm torn on both parks. So please someone start this poll now.

I'm ok with either one! I drove 7 hours to get to the chicken swap in CA last year and had a blast, so you know I'll be there no matter what! I do have to admit that that discription of Bartley Ranch sure sounds intriguing! I just googled it and it doesn't look hard to get to on the map. Really looking forward to whatever you all decide!

Tyler I just used a wood floor but I'm sure there are better choices. I read that cement was best but since I elevated my coop that was not an option.

Bartley Ranch sounds interesting to me, too! So I guess that means a "2".

Tyler I also use wood floors. I just use the deep litter method, about 4" of straw hay on the floor. The chickens do a pretty good job of burying their waste by scratching around in it. Twice a year (spring and fall) I clean it out and throw it on the compost heap and replace it with fresh straw. With this dry climate, it's very neat and easy!
