Nevadans?

Hey, Penturner!

In the Coops section of BYC there's one built by a guy in NM (if I remember correctly, high plains southern NM at the base of the Rockies...well, 6000+ elevation, anyway). It's got a solar heater.... Well, the solar panel on the roof powers a pump and heats the water for a holding tank that's in the interior of the coop and keeps the whole shack/coop nice and toasty. Definitely a green maneuver if you're bent that way.

I used to have a silver polish rooster. I witnessed a coyote taking a delaware hen and the polish attacked the coyote and saved the hen. It happened about 10 feet in front of me. If I wasn't 7 months pregnant at the time I would have caught the coyote with my bare hands. So the polish kicked a coyotes ass and saved one of his ladies...and then the coyote got him a week later...and then a coyote hunter got the coyote a week after that. I wish I could have gotten it all on tape. The look on that yotes face was awesome. The polish tore after him for a good 200 feet. He made me proud that day

Welcome to the Nevada thread NevadaRon! Great looking starter flock.

I am enjoying all these stories about the Polish breed. A bird that will attack a coyote sounds like a winner to me!

Well off to the BBQ...

In all my urgency trying to get my coop up and running, I forgot that if I get chicks it will be a few weeks before they can even think of using that coop. So, I'm going to put in an order through mypetchicken.com. Here is what I'm ordering (all females): 3-4 Easter Eggers, 3 Cuckoo Maranas, 3 Barred Rocks, 2 Welsummers, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes and one White Crested Black Polish. I was hoping for some silkies but they're not available until September. Anyone local have some silkies available? Laceynoelle, were you the one who might have an extra Polish (sorry, not much sleep this weekend)? If you do, I'm still interested. Appreciate any thoughts and comments? Thanks!

the feed store on rancho and lone mountain... jones feed.... has chicks most of the summer, and in their bantams (they think bantam is the breed so don't ask what breed bantams they have they'll just tell you bantams...and look at you like YOU'RE stupid...) but just look in the brooder for any with black skin and 5 toes... check the bottoms of their feet to make sure they're black and look under the wings too... sometimes they wont let you touch the birds bt they will show you them as they hold them...

the hardware store out here in overton gets them in fairly regular too.. i just got 5 a few weeks ago... they go FAST out here though.. i can keep an eye out if ou want to drive out here to get one... or in 6 months i might be able to hatch some.. gotta see what sex these grow into.. lol...

i said i might have an extra polish chick coming in the order i'm getting this week... it would probly be a buff laced polish... but i have to wait and see what comes in the box... i gave her 4 breed/colors that i wanted and told her fill the order of 25 as best she could with certain preferences...

sounds like you got a good assortment from MPC....
good luck!!

Humbrd and penturner: Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I wasn't going to move my flock out until the run was ready anyway. Hopefully, the weather will be cooperating by then - if not, I will try to rig up a heat lamp out there.

Thanks, Peep_Show! I'm pretty happy with them. Hopefully I'll finish the coop and run this weekend. Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Thanks Evonne! I was just at Jones Feed and they guy there said they won't get bantams until August. If you do see some out your way, I'd make the drive it's not that bad. If you do have an extra polish, I would love to purchase it from you.

the ladies name is Delores, i met her at a CLUCK event.. a chicken group that's trying to get it's feet under it.. here's a link to one of her craig's list adds.... give her a call and ask what she might have available ( i don't think she sexes chicks though)

Thanks for the heater suggestions. I am thinking solar not so much for green, but to just be self contained and avoid things like extension cords from laying across the yard. i do have a shop that I can wire into if I want to tear thing up enough. Ceramic bulbs sound interesting, I will look into them. I am not real thrilled with the traditional lamp sort of thing due to frequency of bulbs burning out etc. The only time off the day or night that there is not a person up and around here is the coldest hours of the morning. Bad news if a lamp decided to fail in the cold. I guess I cold do a double bulb design though.

Well now in other news. We broke ground on the run expansion. We currently have a single 10X10 run with a little tiny box size coop for the two adult birds to go into at night. We are now starting the first phase of building 4- 4X8 runs next to that. each run will be designed to house one rooster and 4 hens. I am in the process of trying to purchase a top quality White Serama Rooster. My hen is laying eggs but they are not Fertile. I guess I gotta go have the birds and bees talk with Fuego. anyway hopefully in a year or so will have 20 breeding Seramas and lots and lots of chicks available.

Hope you all had an awesome weekend. Mine has been really really good. Got lots accomplished and tons of time with my family.

Knemeyer, i dont have any polish. After all this talk about them though, i might get some.
