I work as a computer programmer, though the company I work for is small enough that I wear all of the IT hats.

Good advice vegaschick. I'm getting a bigger box (hopefully) today and I will try it. We just put in a roosting structure so maybe that will help. My dad thinks it might have happened because my mom was bringing them lettuce and watermelon and putting it in one area. The Sultan can get a bit agressive and maybe they just decided they we're going to put her in her place and it went too far. The two Polish always give them a wide berth, but not her. I asked my husband to look for a couple tree stumps to put in there. Trying to give variety of places to sit for them so they aren't all on one level. Just gotta push him to finish the roosts for the coop now.

She has a scab on her head and I don't want to put her in there till it's gone. I think that will attract them to peck at her again. I'm so nervous for her. I don't want to see her get hurt again.

I'm picking them up from a friend in Martinez next weekend. She told me she was getting them from Trunorth Farms in Walnut Creek and she offered to pick up 2 more for me! They were the last variety on my wish list that I sooo badly wanted! I'm so excited! I don't know much about this breeder, I hope they lay the super dark eggs like the true dutch Barnevelders (or close anyway).

It doesn't matter. From what I've read chickens are color blind. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me since they seem drawn to red and green but I guess color blind in humans doesn't mean they don't see color at all, just that their brains interpret it differently. BTW I forgot to say thank you for your nice post about my flock. Thanks!

Takes one to spot one I guess. Reminds me of when I was in college, some very highbrow sort of guy, that I was just introduced to, asked me what my major was and when I replied "Math" he sneered down his nose at me and said "Well that explains a lot!". I hadn't said more than half a dozen words!

I don't blame you but vegaschick is right they don't do well alone for long. Try putting one of the gentle gals in with her like she suggests. They will form a bond and this will help when you reintegrate her. If nothing else she will stick closer to the polish hopefully saving her some grief. AubreyNoraMarie had a situation where the bonds formed helped save her having to re-home her favorite EE.

Not sure if I have the nerves for chickens

- Not only did I see the coon last night (and animal control won't come out) but now it seems my neighbor's cat is very interested in the gals.

We have had the same cat on our fence and actually in the yard under the coop...we have sprayed the cat with a squirt bottle but it is just time before we are all gone and the cat comes in. I am not sure if the cat is just curious or if it has more sinister intentions...

thanks so much for listening....

Half a dozen words? What did you say - something like this?

SparksNV you need a secure run that completely encomapsses your coop.

This means it is enclosed top-to-bottom - and below! The wire should go at least 6 -12 inches into the ground. My run is 6 ft. tall so it is easy to walk in. That makes the door to the run 6 ft. tall, too. Which means the latch is 4 ft. off the ground - high enough a racoon isn't going to reach it. I'm moving soon and my new place is on the edge of the "wilderness" - so I'm going to build a new run there with much heavier gauge wire since coyotes (and who know what else
hu.gif
) roam freely out there.

I think it was what I didn't say. They were waxing philosophical and I'm a little too much of a linear thinker for some conversations! Either that or he was in one of my Art classes. I am very artistic but I don't think like most artists do. When they asked how my art made me feel, I would usually respond "good".

I stopped at Jones Feed today to get a new feeder and a bigger box for Nan, the white Sultan that got attacked. I told the gal at the register about what happened and she thinks it's because Nan is the only white bird in the group. She said she's done rescues for all types of animals and that sometimes an animal just takes a dislike for a certain color and that may be the problem. She said to try introducing one of the more gentle birds with her, but wait till the scab on her head goes away so it doesn't encouraging pecking. What do you all think? Should I keep trying or give her to someone who has a more gentler flock. She said I might try Gilcrease Bird Sanctuary which is just up the street from me.
