Nevadans?

Horsefeathers,
OMG, your blue laced amerucana mix is BEAUTIFUL. I tried getting my black boy to breed with my white hen, but she's too old, and he has since become a victim of a coyote. I was hoping to get some splashes or blues - do you have eggs from whatever mating produced that cock? I'd be happy to buy some from you -

Hey, remember my poor Uno, (bottom left in first pic) the chick that was the only one that hatched out of a bunch I set? I had to find a companion for the poor lonely thing so I bought Sunshine from a lady in Utah. Sunshine is at least 2 wks older but they get on famously. I searched high and low for some chicks more his age to no avail. I hated the idea of raising just 2 so got 4 more chicks 2 weeks later (the soonest I could find any), 3 of which are EE's and 1 cute little RIR. Here's a good pic in which you can see the size difference between them. Sunshine is a full month older than the little one's (a week old here) but is really great with them - they treat her kinda like a mom. It's very sweet to watch. They are now 6, 4 and 2 wks old.

Good Morning!!!

Great photos Vegaschick!

Going to the state fair this morning then Olivia has a soccer game - hopefully she won't get cancelled - last week they cancelled due to the thunder.

Went out to dinner last night at Red Robin - poor dh woke up in the middle of the night vomitting - we think either undercooked burger or poor preparation. Taylor & I did not have burgers and didn't get sick.

How about that Saints game?! GEAUX SAINTS!!! We watched the first half at Red Robin & Taylor was very embarrassed, I was getting into the game & was (I felt) discretely vocal with my encouragement - but you know 13 year olds - they are embarrassed just being seen with mom & dad! My Saints superbowl championship flag is proudly flying in front of our house!

This photo was taken during the Superbowl - my dh wearing a Drew Brees jersey and our pug puppy, Brees on his shoulders!

Hope everyone has a great day!

SparksNV – the only good thing I can say about ground squirrels is that Hannah LOVES them. They are one of the critters she is encouraged to hunt. They eat the chicken feed, will steal eggs, dig holes and excavate where you do not want them, they take chicken feed and bury it around the yard, tease the dogs, damage the garden and other yard plants and I have heard of them killing little chicks.

I hope your DH is feeling better – yucky food sickness is no fun and the reason I no longer do any buffets or seafood in Reno (ok, no buffets any place) and generally no seafood inland. It was a good game!

Fantastic – almost exactly what I thought when I saw the pile.

Well you made laugh and snort – not a pretty picture! I feel the same way about them, plus mice, rats, pack rats (who are back this year), moles, flies, ravens, starlings (goodness gracious you would think I hated nature!) - the jerks

.

Holly31 – I would be more than happy to send you eggs. I know exactly who his mother is and can send you some of just hers or her and my other EEs who are laying (two of whom are her blue daughters – Blueberry and Marionberry), the other is my sweet Amelia. Or, not trying to temp you up this way at all – but I also have this cockerel full brother to the one I showed Lacy – he is a 3.23 hatch – course while you were up here, I might try and talk you into a capon demo.

Vegaschick – Sunshine is beautiful, just love the color

. And the other chick pictures are just precious!

Ok, there were 4 large fowl Black Orpingtons (4.29 hatch) and 9 bantam Silver Laced Cochins (5.6 hatch). All are dining on chicken soup. A huge feather duster!

Ah, thirteen. i was way off on the pic.
Those squirrels do kill chicks, it happens out here a lot. They dont even eat them, just kinda leave the little bodies out half eaten. We have a lot squirrels, and they took out seven ducklings one day. We sat out for two days with a home made squirrel trap and a pellet gun, and caught four or five, and fed them to the pigs. Now we have a BB gun out by the back door, if we go out and see a squirrel we pump that sucker up and take aim.
I like the ravens and crows, they eat the pigeon babies. They havent bothered the chickens or other animals, so im good.

So we brought home this shed, and kept it as in-tact as possible. This is how my mom and I brought it home:

We wouldnt have taken the sides off, but otherwise it was way to heavy to lift. Pretty awesome, right? lol.

Also yesterday there was a big hawk out. They chickens were making a fuss and hiding out by a shed (they were out), but i couldnt find anything wrong. Wheni went to the front yard i found a big young hawk sitting in one of the elm trees. I took a picture cause im awesome, but it turned out blurry.

But it was really thanks to Mythkat's rooster that she gave me that morning that no one got taken! Some of the banties are reallly small, like the oeg and d'anvers, and the banty roo's really dont look out as they should, but Chevy (thats his name) Gave his little run call and the girls responded, and Chevy was standing watch! Thank you Mythkat, that was seriously great timing.

Yes, they are very pretty. Thats a nest, but its an old sparrow nest thats gone to peices. My mom thinks its a yound red tail hawk, because of his size. I guess the young ones have that coloring until their first most. Idk, but ill google it if yall are interested.

Such cuties!!! Sounds like Uno lucked out, Sunshine sounds like a great Mom!

13 Genny?!! We were all way off. Does a bantam Cochin count as a whole chicken?
lol.png
Yes Daniel this would mean it takes 4-5 of your Seramas to make 1 real chicken.

Genny I love your squirrel hunting dog!!! They thrive around here (squirrels, not squirrel hunters) and they love to devastate our veggie gardens!

Lacey I'd like to know what kind of hawk that is if you don't mind.

SparksNV let us know how the fair is. Didn't go last year since the year before (or was it two years ago?) was pretty disapointing. Worms for poo? And here I've been giving it away!

I've actually got way too many cartons now! At first people were saving them for me but there weren't enough to keep up with the eggs my gals were laying so I finally ordered a small box of misprints from eggcartons.com and started charging .25 extra for eggs if someone didn't have their own carton (what the misprints cost per carton). It kind of backfired cause then everyone started bringing cartons for themselves and plenty of extras from friends, family and coworkers. Now they are piling up everywhere!

Been a while! I made it to the state fair and met some of the Chicken peeps from the show in Washoe Valley earlier in the year. I was also very lucky!! I had those straight run Penedensenca from early June. Well, I ended up with 3 roos. Cant have roos where I live. So I took 2 of them to the fair and met up with a very nice lady who does wildlife rescue and keeps chickens. She was kind enough to take them for me! So I am officially roo free.

I will keep you all posted once I start getting eggs. We will see if they really lay a dark brown (almost black) egg.

Does anyone in Reno area have true Araucana chickens. I want the real blue egg, not a blue green. I also read there was a similar breed that laid a pink egg? Anyway, I now know that all my "Americaunas" are really just easter eggers. The eggs are cool, they are always an olive green and sometimes speckled. So, if anyone has such a chicken, laying true blue eggs, I would love to add them to the flock.

I still want a couple Marans, if anyone local has them. I have a 1 year old barred rock and a 1 year old production red I would like re-home. Too many chickens, not enough space.

Thanks!!!

Tom
