Nevadans?

Welcome to the NV Gang! I am in the North Reno area, we just got started up again in late August. We are still building our coop, getting our chicken breeds worked out and overall enjoying several of the most fun things in the world, raising a family and farming.
smile.png
We are hoping to have our breeding program for our chickens in full force by Spring. We picked GLW's, SLW's, Black Australorps and Buff Orpingtons. Triple purpose birds, eggs, meat and showing potential. We have some similar breeds although you did not mention if your Wyandottes were full size or bantams. If they are full size birds maybe we can get together trade up some ladies/gents in the future.

Update on the homefront, *sigh* We lost a baby Australorp today. I have been taking them outside for a couple of hours a day for the last 4 days and while I was inside cleaning their pen the boys were outside with the chickens. I heard my youngest screaming and by the time I had got outside I saw both of my boys had a baby chick that they were arguing about who was going to hold it. Since I have told them no holding the babies while I am not with them my youngest panicked and threw his chick back in the pen breaking her neck when she hit the ground. At first I thought she was just stunned and I held her stroking her and trying to talk her back but 20 minutes into holding her I realized her little neck was broken and she was gone.
hit.gif

The boys were super upset and I was devastated. It is terrible how quickly you attach yourself to these little guys. Anyway, I am setting up some more pictures of the remaining chicks on my BYC page and I will post some pics of them when I am done.

UPDATE: I set up this page so you can see some of the things going on around here: Brooders, Coops, Runs

Thanks!! All that I listed are Bantams, I have about 25 Standard Laying hens but I don't show them anymore, too worriesome to introduce disease or stress the pecking list too much! So sorry to hear about the mishap on the chick, I think we all have stories like that: I fostered a pug dog for a short while and had this one chick that suddenly learned how to fly out of the brooder, well before I could assemble a wire lid, out flew the chick, and someone left the laundry room door open and the pug dog ate the WHOLE THING(so sad because the dog got sick later and I had to clean up the most heart wenching mess!)

Please come to the show even if you don't actually show a bird, you will see the most amazing and unbelievable array of gorgeous pampered poultry in your life!!! and the show is FREE to come look around, there will be kids crafts and an amazing raffle!!

to the NV thread. Thank you for sending me the email with the show program/info (I am sure you did not know it was me as I was just one of many, but thank you). I also am struggling to decide if I am going to bring any birds - having them bring home "something" scares the snot out of me BUT I have plans on going and having a look-see. So glad that it is happening this year, unlike last year.

SparksNV - and anyone else - here is a short video showing a sneaky pullet going to lay -
She starts on the right side of the steps, and PEEKS under to check to see if the "nest box" is occupied. She was hatched same time as Sassy, she is from BamaChicken's eggs - Black Orpington.

SparksNV and Ron Thank you for the compliments on my birds - you all will give me a big head

Honestly I can take no credit for my Mille Fluer cochins at this time, they are all the hard work and love of BYC member Lynne (wmicasa). Hopefully next year, my homegrown/homebred cochins can be shown.

Well we went down to the store yesterday to get at least the roof materials for the coop before it started raining. The one day a week we have to go whole hog on the coop and it threatens rain all day. Anyway, you are not going to believe our insane luck meter. The clear plastic roofing that we wanted to get, hiked up in price to almost $27/sheet but the Galvanized Aluminum sheeting was down to $14/sheet so wanna guess which one we got?
big_smile.png
So we got the roof and then we walked over just to check out to see if they had any cheep linoleum remnants and amazingly enough they had 8X12 sheets ready and cheap. That will give us enough to do the floor and the nest bottoms. So we got that and then as we were walking over to the check out we decided to hang a left and check out the fencing. Just to see the price difference on the fencing we picked up on Friday.

$175 per 100 ft!!!!
th.gif
So basically for around $60 (fence cost plus gas back and forth) we got $437.50 worth of fencing. The heavy gauge fencing we got is more expensive than the chain link fence which was pretty crazy.

Then again on our way out to the check out we walk down the dreaded plywood isle just to torture ourselves that we are this close to finishing the coop but cannot afford it. And what do we see? 1/2 in plywood sheets $8/sheet! It is the chipped board not the solid wood but the price comparison is way too big btwn the two and at least this gets some walls up on our coop. The solid wood plywood although down in price is still $25/sheet. Originally when we looked at it, it was $11/sheet. No worries though, we will just slather a million coats of paint on what we got to water proof it and we should be fine at least until Spring.

So we get everything loaded up into the truck and head home. As we are pulling into our driveway it starts sprinkling rain. We rush out of the truck, get the roofing unloaded and realize we do not have a ladder. So my DH rigs up a redneck (1001 Ways To Die Episode waiting to happen) ladder out of a 55 gallon drum, cement block and 2X6's. I am spending the whole time running my sons off because they have decided that the Rain Gods need appeasing and they are going to use the 55 gallon drum that my DH is wobbling on as their drums for their rain dance. Meanwhile my DH is standing on top of this wreck of a ladder trying to screw down galvanized Aluminum sheets and praying that lightening does not decide to use him as a conductor.

It was definitely a sight to watch for sure. But we got the roof on literally seconds before it cut loose and let the buckets-o-rain fly and we got all of the plywood stacked inside the chicken coop so every thing is ready to go tonight for wall measuring and cutting. The only things we need are a door for the front and paint. Mary-Ellen called during the middle of this fiasco trying to setup a meetup time and offered 3 gallons of wonderful white and grayish purple paint so we only need about 2 more gallons and we'll be set.

For something that should have been the easiest thing in the world to put together this coop trip has definitely turned out to be a hell of a ride.

I hope everyone else had a great weekend and your chickens stayed nice and toasty during the sudden down pour.

Hello everybody! Boy you all sure have been busy! Congrats to those with new chicks (sorry the one baby didn't make it Eglyntine but I know the boys have learned a very valuable lesson about the delicate nature of baby chicks).

Welcome to the Nevada thread pigtail21!!!

And thank you so much for the info on the NNPFA show in November. Don't have any birds that I show but I'm really looking forward to coming as a Look-y-Loo.

Eglyntine good luck with the coop construction. I hope the rainy weekend that is forcasted for next weekend doesn't materialize. For Reno, we sure have had a rainy October so far.

Genny, how is the hand doing? Cute video! Makes me think that maybe molting is not the only reason egg production is down around here. Maybe I should start scouring all the hiding places in the yard (I am not looking forward to trying to get to the middle of the bamboo though).

Jeeper1540, I don't think there is anything you can do but wait it out.

'Course, I am a newb, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Molting is Nature's way of replenishing/recharging the well. After churning out loads of babies, they have a bad hair day or several. I'd go on strike and go hide, too!
The chicken's body is probably using a bit of protein churning out new feathers, so maybe give them some extra nummy worm treats? But you kind of have to just wait out the body directing it's energy from feather production back into egg laying. Nobody said chickens were multi-taskers....
