NewChic I'm so sorry for your loss!

It could be so many things but I'm not real sure what's in your area. I first thought Fisher King but didn't think they lived in this area.

Yes some racoons do have brownish hairs. Chicken wire is no match for them, they are strong enough to pull it off.
I sure hope somebody in your area can be of more help!

Thanks. I'm not a fan of needles going into me so I'm kinda hoping my blood pulse will be to high again.

Wow! I didn't realize it had been so long. 150 pages timed by this thread. I have been very busy. We not only have a new flock of Chickens thanks to Sunny. we spent the summer learning to grow our own tobacco. It has gone pretty good as far as the growing part. So far the smoking is not so good. Pretty weak tobacco so far but we have a long way to go with it.

Sunny, al the girls are doing great. A couple are laying eggs but we are still waiting for the others to kick in. All are healthy and strong even the runt. I tell tell her from the rest now.

One of the chicks we got did turn out to be a rooster. Which leads me to my reason for posting.

I bought these birds from Sunny last April, She sold me some black ameraucanas and some EE's. Now I know this is almost sacreligious. But I wouldn't know one from the other. They all look like black ameraucanas to me.

This is a photo of the Roo

The beetle green showing in the feathers is accurate. this roo is not aggressive and is used to close human contact daily. as usual he prefers his distance but would not try to bite you if caught.

teh photo does not show his cheeks well but they are there. I cannot say for certain that he is ameraucanas. Maybe Sunny can add some insight. He is one of the younger chicks I bought from you Sunny. I am thinking those three where.

I paid $10 for him as a chick and would like to at least recoup that cost. He has been well cared for and finished out to a fine looking rooster (and no I am not biased...much). More than anything I would like to find him a home where he is needed. We only want eggs. and can be more useful. So feel free to PM me any offer you are willing to make.

He has started crowing but I think he is still a bit to young to be fertile just yet. He is just now starting to get his crow in good and strong. He was around three weeks old in April making him about 5 months old or so now. about right for producing you some spring hatching eggs.

Now a little side issue. Along with growing my own tobacco this year, i also started trying to grow tomatoes to make all of our own sauces etc this summer. In the process we have made a plan to find some land and start living more independently. growing our own food,.. producing our own power etc. Giving up this Roo is sort of a bitter sweet thing. I know in a year or two I will be regretting it. But right now he simply does not fit and we have no place to try and make him fit In two years we will very likely be looking at trying to produce our own chickens for eating and maintaining an ongoing flock.
sort of like we have our little flock with the wrong timing. It is sad because this is a really nice little rooster. anyway i just want you all to know that we offer this guy up with a few mild regrets already built in. I am not trying to get rid of a cull by any means. I hope someone locally will take him in. He does crow but for a larger chicken it is not really loud. My seramas have a louder crow than this guy has managed so far. Warning his is improving.

I'm so sorry about your loss! That's scary. from what I've read on BYC, use hardware cloth, probably 1/4" over the window openings secured with screws and a washer all the way around.

Sorry about your loss, NewChic13!

From your description, I think what you have is an American Marten. I've seen quite a few of them up in the area of Woodfords and Hope Valley. I don't know how far down from the mountains they come but lots of animals seem to be attracted to areas developed by humans that you wouldn't normally expect to see in that environment. That would also explain the ability of chicken wire to stop them - as pointed out by Sunny, chicken wire wouldn't stop a raccoon.

I may be wrong but I think Genny (a.k.a. HorseFeatherzNV) is working on getting NPIP certification. If you search this thread, I seem to recall she said something about that a while back.

Hi everybody! Just taking a break from moving to say "hi". Hey Daniel! Long time no "see". I wish you all the best in your new endeavors! Some land and a more "off the grid lifestyle" sounds like a great fit for you, Kim and the kids. Yes the younger group were pure ameraucanas from a B/B/S hatch I got from Wolftracks. Afraid I don't remember the name of the breeder. These were not from John Blehm and were more pricey than his. He is a beautiful roo! That beetle green sheen is correct for a pure black am. Good luck finding him a new home!

I have 2 more little marans chicks. I'm afraid my whole hatch (so far) is only 4 total. I'm not gonna try shipped eggs again (course I've said that before). Our P.O. is just too hard on them. I cannot believe how huge the first two are compared to the 2 that were born today! They are 2 and 1/2 times the size of the newborns at only 1 week old! Wow these buggers grow fast!

113 Tyler!!! Whoa that is super high! Your fear of needles probably has something to do with that!

Yea Genny what did you find out? I remember you quoting a cost per bird, which seemed ridiculous when you have more than a few birds, but did you find out anything more? If I start with a small flock of marans do I need to get every new chick tested or can I just get my starter flock tested and as long as I don't add to them be ok?
