Sheryl, I'd love to go to the show if you'd have me, but it all depends on how busy I am.

Thanks!

So how does everyone deal with the winter here, with small flocks? It doesn't really get cold here... (I'm from Salmon, Idaho. They don't close school until it's -20.) So my mom always put a heater in the coop, even though there were at least 50 birds and 10 rabbits in there, and it was a very sturdy wooden barn. The chickens took care of the rest.
I have a very small structure, 4 chickens. How cold can it get before I need to worry?

We're building a bigger, cozy coop in the spring for the expanded flock. But my current ladies are going to have to wait.

I keep reading that chickens can handle 0 degrees as long as they are not in too large a bldg for them to be able to keep warm with their own body heat. You live in the valley and it rarely gets below 0 there. IDK I've always had at least a dozen birds in one coop but they seemed to do just fine with no heat or insulation. I did hang a bulb over the waterer though that came on for 2-3 hours before sun rise and went off 2-3 hours after. I'm sure that added a bit of heat because the water rarely froze all the way through once we started doing that.
What do you folks with smaller flocks do?

I agree about the EE's too Ron, my Wyandottes & BR's do lay better than Sundae since Sundae would lay 2 in a row and take a break but the girls layed 6 in a row and then take a break but then again, my girls just started laying so it may change up. Monique layed just as well as the little ones and she's a FBCM/Orp mix.

Sorry but if this is the same Monique you got from me, she is a cuckoo marans. No mix but she is hatchery stock. Glad to hear she is laying well. Bella is the mixed one and she is half EE (or Del) and half blue Orp. Oh and you're getting Mythkat (Kathy) and Seth mixed up. Kathy asked about the next show not Seth.

Oh man! I hate when I do that, I'm so sorry MythKat.

to me! Man that Cap'n Jack has all the luck! The next thing that could happen - Tyler is going to want to know if you would take him in too! See Tyler, you needed to watch movies and feed him popcorn and he would be have been nice to you too!

Ok Lacey, you are on the list to go to Stockton with me. Let's hope the weather holds up. Also, this is right around my birthday and it's one of those big ones!

The big 50!

I know most people would not ever say their age on here, a few would, but this one is very special to me. Not very many of you know there is liver disease in my family and I have it. I should be in la la land by now and waiting for a transplant. My mind should be toast, it's sorta like Alzheimer's but actually it's too much protein that my liver produces into the blood stream and body. It makes you where you can't remember numbers like what year it is, your address or your phone number. You won't be able to add 2+2 or count up to 10. But instead I'm celebrating a birthday and I am still working which I should not be doing. My liver enzymes are normal too. So yeah!

What day is your birthday Sheryl? My birthday is actually that weekend - the 29th. I'll be turning 51.

I really like your upbeat attitude towards your condition.

Oh you're not that much younger than me! I thought you said you were 5 years younger. It's only half that. Good to hear that you are doing so well!!! 50 is no big deal. I felt no different than I did at 49.

Enjoy! You could be around another 50 years driving your hubby crazy. With some of the new treatments coming out we could all live well past our expectations! Actually not sure I'm ready for that but the next phase of my life may be too much fun to give up any time soon, we'll see.

Cool! The Stockton show is the end of January. DH and I will probably go if the weather is nice. Too far away to make any firm plans though. Sounds like a lot of folks might be going.

Kim will they be selling a lot of birds? Reno doesn't have a lot to choose from (for sale) at their show.

Alright Ron! My birthday is the 31st of January!

You know it's very strange when you're told something and you tell the doctor okay. And you continue on with what you are doing and take tons of medication, yuck, and your kids telling you see grandma, that's going to be you isn't it. And you say it is but not right now. I'm on an experimental treatment that's actually working. I'm the first one they actually put in remission on purpose. It's all good and all things are the way they are going to be and if you can't change it then you must just enjoy what you can while you can. I can actually say I'm enjoying life and doing whatever it is I want to do.

Lots of birds go to the sale barn. I love that place. I spend more time there than any other place. It's a BIG show with several buildings being used.
