He's still wobbly, but I think it's a little better. I picked him up yesterday to give him his vitamins, and normally when he freaks out his head jerks all over the place. This time it was just a bit wavy. He's growing fast! So I think he'll be fine.

No thanks! Losing weight quickly is one of the worst things you can do for your metabolism. Our bodies are designed to survive occasional famines and they do this by slowing your metabolism down causing you to burn calories more slowly! When you go on a crash diet you are sending signals to your body that it is famine time. I know these contests are all the rage since the TV show Biggest Losers came on but they are seriously unhealthy! If you could take a poll of how many crash diets extremely overweight folks in general have been on you'd quickly see a pattern develop.

I don't consider 3 months crash dieting. It helps begit a lifestyle change! No shame in losing 5 lbs in three months. I think it's an overreaction sunny, but that's just my opinion.

That's why I made the contest period 3 months. I completely agree with you... if it was 1 month, it would really encourage unhealthy eating. I don't know many people that can follow fad diets for 3 months, and that's more than long enough for a lifestyle change to kick in and start showing results.

There's no way I can monitor people's healthy habits in a contest like this, so that's why I left "pounds lost" as the determining factor.

What I wrote was actually much calmer than what my honest opinion is. Losing weight healthily is a lifestyle change not a temporary diet of any sort. 3 months doesn't give any type of health guidelines nor does it require a person to be informed or healthy to start with. At least on that show the folks are evaluated by a doctor before and during. Just the word "contest" revs up many folk's competitive side. BTW I must have completely missed the limit of 5 lbs during that 3 month period.

No, losing 5 lbs in 3 months is not going to hurt anyone unless you have some serious medical issues. I also doubt that 5 lbs would win a contest for anyone joining and IMHO that is where the problem lies. We were asked if we wanted to join and I have given my answer to this question to the best of my abilty. There is plenty of info out there on the subject (if you can wade through the millions of ads from everyone out there that is hot to make a buck off of folks insecurities and less than stellar health). I will say that this is an area that I have a lot of training in and I have seen many many (women usually) come to me wanting a quick fix for a problem that took a long time to create. It broke my heart to see how hard folks are on themselves and how unrealistic their weight loss goals were. Much of this is brought on by our society and the reality that you can't make money telling people they are just fine the way they are.

I'm not trying to be contrary but I used to teach cardio and strength training and this is a topic that hits me hard since I have seen and heard many many sad sad stories from folks that are just dying (yes sometimes literally) to achieve an unrealistic goal due to pressure from others.

I do believe that whatever weight is healthiest for you is what should be your goal and the slower you lose it the better! I've lost 12 lbs in the last year and I am very happy with this. I can't do the serious cardio I used to do so I have gone about this in the best way I know how. Not that a faster loss would be a problem but I would strongly encourage anyone (just as I required my clients to do in the past) to go about it under the supervision of a doctor and not to do it just to win a contest.

I don't want to upset anyone, you are entiltled to your opinion and I am entiltled to mine. However this can be, and is, a serious issue for some folks and if you had seen a fraction of the heartbreak I have, I know you would agree! It is impossible for someone who only needs to lose 5 lbs to completely understand what a sad issue this is for many. I don't ask that you change your opinion just please respect mine.

Lol sunny I love your strong mindednes and figured you wouldn't mind my respectful disagreement. The point for me was not that crash dieting was okay, just that a nie competitioncould be what some people need to kick of that lifestyle change they've always wanted to make
