Nevadans?

Seth , You can move them out into a coop earlier depending on how warm it is outside. could put a heat lamp in with them for awhile at night until they're feathered out.

I love my composters! I had Russ build 2 of them last year, and they worked great. Though I think we build up a little too much compostable waste for two... now a lot less since the chickens are now the midpoint in the Circle O' Food. Speaking of which... the barred rock and the australorps have already learned that, if the others see me and come running to me, there is something good in store for them.

horseshowmomnv, it looks great so far! And we'll have several nice days to get work done... I'm mourning the fact that I don't have $200 just lying around for me to stain the rest of the fence. It'll have to wait until the important things are done.

Got the rest of my rabbit cages today! Now they get to go sit in a corner until the springtime work is done and I actually have time to build a nesting box.
are you going to get some rabbits or do you have other plans for the cages?

Missy, I found this idea on pinterest. scroll about half way down the page on this link to see the instructions. looks cool.

That's a great use of space! I like it. I wonder how well it would hold moisture in our climate, though. That's the biggest problem I find with a lot of these green gardening techniques... they're great for places that actually get humidity and rain. I love the self-watering planters for that reason... the only evaporation is through the leaves of the plant.

We're going to get rabbits and raise them for meat. But since chick/gardening season is right on us, I'm not going to start rabbits until that all calms down. A lady was getting rid of the cages for free on Craigslist, and we had already planned to do it, so I went up and got the cages. They'll sit in the yard for awhile. Every few months, I see someone selling tons of rabbits for $5 apiece on Craigslist, so I'll look for a deal like that. As long as it's a breed that will be decent for meat.

Here is our economy brooder, picked up the old cabinet from Habitat from Humanities, 20.00, metal wire, picked up a pet exercise 5ft kennel off CL for 10.00, finally the vinyl table cloth to protect the wood base, we already had that. I would love to give this away when we are done, but I have a feeling chicken math will set in! LOL!

The last time we needed a metal grate for our brooder, we took the bottom rack out of the oven. We just cleaned it off really well afterwards... and anything over 180 degrees kills bacteria anyway.

That is a great idea! I found this collapsible pen to be multi-functional, take the chicks outside for a few moments, and for a gate for our dogs. It was a great deal!
So many wonderful idea's on these forums!

that was a good craigslist score! on the webpage it said you would need to water it every 4-5 days so maybe every 2-3 days here?

Two years ago, I grew peppers in a conventional planter. I had to water at least once a day, or the plant was in trouble. But then, that was July/August, and lettuce wouldn't be growing well then anyway. And lettuce likes a bit of shade. Hmmm, I'll have to try it. I'm also going to plant some of my potatoes in a reusable shopping bag, and see how that does for water retention.

Happy birthday, Aubrey! I hope you get a chance to log on and see all the love!
