On the noise of roosters issue. A little more info on what specifically is considered a nuisance. A dog can be allowed to bark for up to 15 minutes and not be considered a nuisance. Roosters would be likewise. Other noise restrictions apply such as no barking after 9 P.M etc. I am not sure how early noise is restricted though. But I think it is about 6 a.m. I have a couple of serama rooster in my back yard and never have had a problem concerning them. One is a crowing fanatic. He is out there making his presence known as I type. Larger roosters do have a louder crow though.
I really look forward to doing one and maybe having something like a Reno BYC'rs pot luck lunch at the same time. Maybe BBQ over our own self made stove. I will have to see how doable that would be.

thanks for the info on what constitutes a nuisance. some of my girls sing the egg song but it doesn't last long and is not super early or late.

having a byc potlock sounds fun. we had a picnic last year that was enjoyable to meet people.

Thanks Elizabeth, I guess I didn't scroll down to see Reno is different. That's great. This whole time I thought I was in violation with how far another dwelling needs to be from the coop but nope all is good now. John still won't get a rooster at all because of the noise factor and the neighbors. He also thinks the raccoons haven't found us yet because we don't have a rooster, the raccoons are all around us and so far so good. I want to keep it that way too, those things are nasty and mean.

Daniel, your daughter is strong just like you are. It's always better to show the differences good and bad then to point fingers and yell and all that other stuff some people do. Your grandchild is lucky to have you as well.

I think its the showgirls that need some better luck! yeesh! All in all i would have to say that one bird in six months out of 22 is a pretty good number though, if i was going to stay positive. It is a small price to pay for the birds to have free ranging freedom. I keep telling myself that at least they get t have happy lives flying from one end of the yard to the other

Kim can you link the page youre talking about? i cant find it. are there pictures? I have a basic idea of the kind of roo i would want if we got a large one. Either an extremely colorful marans, or something with a white head and green tail feathers like a sex link. Also I want it to DESPISE elvis and chase him around whenever he goes outside. (you know, keep the fear in him) but yet know that mark and i are the food givers.

Thanks everyone for the concern for my Daughter and my Father. I still don't much more about Dad than I did the other day. Basically they want to try other methods for getting lung tissue samples. My Daughter and I go to court tomorrow morning to get the TPO extended. This is all pretty rough on her simply because court scares her. But she is not showing any sign of feeling sorry for the father. We have done a lot of talking about what motivates a person like him. Not bad mouthing him just helping her understand that not everyone does what they do for good reasons. Nearly everyone knows the right thing to do, and they will claim that they are trying to do the right thing. But you have to look at the results of there efforts in life to see what they really want. Him for example can talk til he's blue in the face about what he needs to do, how he will support his family etc. but has never once since his son was born two and a half years ago held a job. He has never once given my daughter a dime to help take care of the children but will go on and on about everything he is capable of. I think Ashley is really starting to see how her ex is looking for someone to admire him as much as he admires himself. HE has a silver tongue and is convincing, but slowly we are peeling away that silver lining he puts up and she is seeing for herself the emptiness that is behind it. I think she is pretty solid in her frame of mind that is something like this. "Shut up and send a check, I am not real interested in how you get it" I approve heartily with that attitude.

On the topic of Roosters. We still have two Auracauna Roosters (hope I spelt that right) that we are looking for home for. I am a bit stumped as to wether they are even roosters though. We put them in a pen of their own to see if they start crowing or laying eggs. So far none of either and if they where roosters I would have expected crowing by now.

An update on the Rocket Mass heater for those interested. We got back to work on rebuilding it with the latest list of changes yesterday. this time it is considerably different and much bigger. we had to stop until we can get more brick. I plan to do that today. We are going to just bury it in dirt for now rather than make a ton of cob but that will allow us to test the design. Wish us luck. If it works as I want it to I will be ready to show others how to make them. I am really serious about putting something like that together so if you woudl be interested in attending a work shop type thing let me know. I don't expect it to be any cost at this time. If it ends up that materials have to be bought to build a project heater I will let everyone know.
With a little help from you all we will try to convince Sunny to provide some entertainment I am not known to be shy and hove no problem with doing a demonstration at all, I woudl look forward to it. But I will tell you know it will be a hands on class so expect to play in the mud.

I have been going over in my mind a little bit what a demonstration should include. So far I have come up with this.
1. cover the anatomy of the heater and how all the parts basically work including the critical parts that cause the heater to work correctly.
2. a hands on actually build a heater so that people see how the pieces go together along with some sort of drawing that will refresh your memory later when you try to build one on your own.
3. Hopefully we will have our final heater built on our patio as an example of what a finished stove can look like.
4. cover some of the issue that building departments have with heaters of this type and possible ways to overcome them.
5. this is a heater not perfection. It is cheap but not free. So a discussion of it's strengths and weaknesses woudl be a good thing.
6. cover the details of making cobb, selecting other materials and the skillls or techniques needed that are related to building the stove. some of these woudl include ability to cut brick. cut metal and assemble duct work. burn paint for a metal barrel. How to build with cob the and using a trowel or other tools to finish the cob.

None of that really goes beyond basic skills but you would want to be aware they are required before deciding to making one of these heaters.

If anyone has anything else in mind that they would like to have specifically covered let me know. Most important for now. If you are interested in learning how to build one at some yet to be determined date. just let me know.
