Gee, Chris, I sure hope you get him back, that he wasn't a victim of a predator! I know coyotes take small dogs quite often, but if there are many large dogs missing, that doesn't sound like just coyotes.

Tim, we have had black bears in the n'hood around here, some have seen them. Someone poached one and I walked down into the n'hood and found the remaining hide down a deserted road near me after someone clued me in to it. Not surprised by bears or anything, but the mountain lion is something I've always believed was more widespread than the wildlife folks would admit, just not something I wanted to be found on my own piece of property. Makes walking to the coops at dusk a bit scarier, lol.

I would imagine it would. We're every year hearing complaints about how many deer there are. What a nuisance to people gardens and yards. Perhaps they should make the trip up here.

Not that I'd want to see one. However I am opposed to ripping up all the forests and lands in the name of jobs, when there is plenty in the Syracuse area already torn up and sitting vacant. IMO mall companies should be required to restore or reuse land already paved before they can start tearing up trees and building parking lots.

which is why we cannot really afford a dog on our military pension, the unexpected medical stuff. And we do take care of our dogs, not like those around here who think if you put a collar on it (no tags, no rabies shots), you've done your duty. We do it right or not at all.

Same here. When I grew up we were so poor, we couldn't afford a dog, so we had to take turns biting the mailman.

It's raining buckets, just before we will be getting sleet and snow. Was looking out my window in the office and saw the gray fox run across my driveway halfway between the house and the driveway gate, inside the perimeter fence. Since I rehomed one cockerel and after that, my oldest, largest cockerel was killed by his sire a couple of weeks ago, I am a bit nervous about that.

If you see those fox during the day be careful that's a sign of rabies especially if they are close to your house and acting unafraid. I've had owl and bobcat here.

We've seen the fox twice during the daytime. Though our county does have quite a few incidents of rabies, I'm not sure it was rabid. It didn't act unusual, as far as I could tell. At least, it wasn't like the bears we saw outside of Chatsworth a week ago. Passed three bears just driving down the road at 11 a.m. I know bears have been in my neighborhood, but never saw more than the fur, but three at one time is a bit disconcerting.

I think animals can be active during the day without it being a sign of rabies, especially if they are used to seeing humans, have babies to feed or are just very hungry.
I've seen plenty of fox in daytime that were not rabid.

I must say it was plenty wary of us and generally, appeared in very healthy condition. It was full coated with shiny eyes and very bushy tail, not scruffy or mangy looking whatsoever. Obviously, it's the wrong time of year for kits, so doesn't have babies to feed. The second time we saw it, when it ran across the driveway, it was a dreary, rainy day, and I would expect predators to be out and about on darker days, long before nightfall. We are prepared to remove it if it becomes necessary.

I see fox out often during the day, this fall we had two at once here in the field jumping around catching mice. That's why I don't free range really wish I could. And lots of hawks.

A fox ran between my house and my neighbor's house about 2 months ago in the afternoon. He/she was really fast.
