NEVER buying full grown hens again!

I misunderstood your question. But I thought it would kill the mites right away. However we dusted on Friday and today (Tuesday) they are still picking at their vent area- I don't know maybe it's just a habit??

The mites are most likely gone. It is the mite bites itching, so the chickens are pecking/scratching the area.

You need to put your hands on them to inspect the area to make sure the mites are gone though. Just so you know for sure !

I don't think you misunderstood my ? I wanted to know how long I need to wait before it is safe to eat the eggs after they have been treated with Sevin Dust. I know that it takes it a bit to kill the live ones, then there's the mite eggs. I don't like using chemicals, but DE isn't helping. So if anyone knows how many days one needs to discard eggs from Sevin dust treated chickens, please let us know.

Mites are hard to get rid of. I also heard that you should bathe the birds with dog flea shampoo.

I would really like to know this too. I haven't been eating the eggs from the chickens that were dusted with sevin (mainly b/c I'm pregnant and don't want to risk it). I figure I will wait two weeks and then eat them again??

The msds for sevins dust rates its health hazard as high.

It is food safe I guess because it is used on crops all the time so I would think if it is washed off well it would be okay.

However it is labeled for use on produce, not lifestock so I would try and find an alternative.

Other than DE, what else is safe? It is really hard to find info about what can be used safely and the egg withdrawl time.

What about neem seed shampoo? I know that works on head lice...you suds them up, then let sit for 10 min...with the birds you'd probably have to wrap them in a towel to sit for 10 min...

Okay...so purina has a poultry dusting powder and that is the same as sevins dust, but it is 5% and I believe sevins is 10 %. If you swing buy a purina dealer maybe you could read the bag about how long after treatments eggs should be discarded.
