Hi,
Before my introduction, I need HELP described further below!!
I have had chickens in my life since my brother brought home some chicks from his 1st grade class egg hatch out. Then, true to form, I brought home the chicks from my 1st grade classroom education on chicks hatching.
That was 43 yrs ago! My last hen from my 1st grade classroom lived until she was 15yrs old. She still laid eggs, until the day she passed.
I had long hiatus chickenless, until my own daughter turned 7, and I decided that we needed chicks for her to show in 4-H, along with her horse, rabbits, and Pygmy Goats. (So, I think that I wanted chickens again!)
Her eldest chicken was also 15yrs old, when a Mangy fox killed her... poor Henny Penny! She had survived a devastating loss of all of her coopmates, when a Fisher cat decided to kill everything, except for Henny Penny and Cheese (our Pekin ducks other half Quackers was also killed)
There were feathers all over our 10 acres, and bodies everywhere- extremely sad day!
I decided to purchase more chicks, and, of course, couldn't decide on a specific breed, so I bought an assortment. Over the years, several were killed by predators of all different kinds.
Now, I have a LGD puppy to protect my new batch of chicks, older chickens, ducks pair of Dewlap Toulouse, my small herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats, and my rabbits.
I have a problem, however, as I STILL couldn't narrow it down to a specific breed, other than I know that I wanted Whiting True Blues, some Rocks, and several other breeds of chickens. SOooo..... I bought 2 assortments from McMurray; an assortment called Rocks and the Blues (ALL pullets), which includes the Plymouth Rocks and WTB'S that I wanted. And, another assortment of Murray's Choice Layers- which includes all good layers of various egg colors.
My chicks arrived yesterday, and they separated the 2 assortments, as requested, as well as 2 WTB'S Roosters, and a surprise chick (Cochin).
HELP- I bought 102 chicks total, as I have sold some, and I could get a REALLY good deal on all, especially the WTB'S!!
Is there ANY way to distinguish between a Whiting True Blue and a Plymouth Rock? They included 4 varieties of Plymouth Rocks.... what should I look for in trying to determine between the 2 breeds?
Some of the Rocks are sold, and I want to keep some of the other breeds included in the other shipment, as I received several Hamburgs, and about 7 other breeds!!
Thanks so much for any help!!!
(And, yes, I have the room to keep all of the chicks that I don't sell)
I have a small farm stand, which I'm trying to expand. I never have enough eggs to meet demand. And, I hope to include eggs, veggies, different meats, dairy, and other animal products raised on my farm. As well as, hopefully, making prepared foods/dinners to go, and an ice cream stand. All organic, non-GMO, clean foods.
But, I really want to start raising WTB'S, so as many WTB'S that I can keep, the better!! And, I believe that I will keep the Hamburgs as well, seeing how critical they are. I will just have to buy a Rooster!! The chicks that are sold are supposed to leave very soon!!
Thanks so much!
