Never leave dogs unsupervised with kids

There was a similiar situation here in OK lab puppy multilated an infant mom was asleep and grandma in the other room. I think the baby was 4 weeks and puppy 8 weeks. Baby was in swing. There is still talk of charges of neglience on both the mom and grandmom.

You know what's crazy??? This same thing happened a few years ago and it was also a husky. I remember telling my friend because she had two huskies and had just had her second child.

poor huskys always getting a bad rap, it's not their fault they have a high pray drive. Mine will chase anything that moves...including a leaf blowing in the wind.

This is such a sad story. And stories like this happen far to often.

I feel horrible for the parents of the baby, loosing a baby and dog.

Undecided here. I feel for the dog and the parents.

The newborn shouldn't have been left alone. But at the same time, had the father just turned his back and it took all of 5 seconds for that dog to attack... well, if it'd been me and my back was turned, I'd have killed the dog before the warden even had a chance to. I know I wouldn't have been able to keep the dog after it did that.

Sad case all around.

How terrible.

My aunt - who is a retired kindergarden teacher - recently brought over her grandson who is 3 and I had to ask her to not let her kid 'kiss' my dogs. My dogs don't know her kid, it absolutely wasn't safe even with my kid-friendly dogs. Somehow, she didn't realize that one of these days a dog is going to bite that kid right in the face...

If an accident predictable, it's preventable. But that does require people to THINK. I cannot imagine leaving a newborn within reach of a loose dog.

Oh, at Lowes the other day I saw someone drop their baby car carrier with the baby in it from the tailgate of their SUV onto the asphalt and it about gave me a heart attack.

Sadly, I see that A LOT. Two of my female cousins could win awards for 'Worst Mother Ever'.... Disgusting.

I work in the Emergency Room in a small (about 5000) town. We see dog bites on a regular basis. It is amazing how ignorant people can be. And every single time we hear "My dog has never bitten before". As if that matters. In a smaller town right next to us an woman in her 60's was mowing on her riding mower and 5 dogs from a neighbors house came and dragged her off and killed her. Our laws are changing (Lillians Law) as I hope they are in all other states. You must be held accountable for your pets actions. If you are going to keep them, they are your responsibility.

I agree, however, parents also need to be responsible for their children. My family was trick-or-treating with a friend, her children, and her dog last year. We were keeping the dog (a very friendly lab) at a safe distance from other people. A three year-old girl ran up to the side of the dog and before we could do anything, had grabbed the dog's face and was giving it kisses on the nose. Luckily, the dog was startled but didn't react agressively. The parents of the girl apparently just thought it was sweet

. If that girl had been bitten, the dog would have been blamed, but it would really have been the fault of the girl's parents.

To the original topic, I didn't have dogs when my children were very small, but I don't think I would have ever thought about the dog mistaking the baby for a toy. This was a very unfortunate thing and really makes me heartsick for those parents.

My husband said the same thing. He said the dog wouldn't have lived long enough to be euthanized by a vet. Frankly, I can understand that reaction.

How awful

I also remember a story about a pomeranian killing an infant. So don't feel safe leaving your infant with a small dog either.
