hello
I am new to raising chickens . I bought my first chickens today . they are leghorns I got six hens 7 weeks old . I need any and all advice on everything ! I want to raise my own eggs and wanted to have some chicks later on but I was told they don't lay on their eggs . so how can I get chicks from my chickens ? I don't want to have to buy more and an incubator is expensive .

Welcome in,

You can always check around in your area, there are folks, clubs, etc that will loan out an incubator or add your eggs to theirs. Standard Leghorns have had so much tinkering/improving them as mass producing eggs that your chances of a hen going broody for you are slim but not impossible. You might think about adding a broody breed hen that will hatch for you, what Rooster breed to you have?

Welcome to BYC. You can add several hens from a broody breed to set on your leghorn eggs, also by the way - you will need a rooster.

You also need a rooster who will do his job just to start .....
you really do not need to buy an incubator when you can
always make one and if you go to the learning center
ya just might find what you are looking fore there and older
hens are the better brooders or a Silky hen is a great sitter ...

lots of people get silkies because they frequently go broody and want to hatch eggs. You can take their eggs away and put fertile eggs of any breed under them instead. They will hatch and raise them as their own. The hen has to be broody at the time - you cant force them to do it
