When I went out to clean my chickens' droppings under their roost, instead of the usual dry multi color stuff it is dark brown and I can see larvae moving in it. So . . . is this just fly larvae, or does this mean they have internal worms? It had been a week or a little more since I'd cleaned. I've had chickens for two years now and never had this happen. Thanks for any insight/advice!

I am so glad that you started this thread. I have noticed the same problem
in my coop as well. I like you keep my coop pretty clean. I hope that it is
not worms buy like you had mentioned flies.

And Emmak, were all the droppings dark brown, or just a few? If all were dark, they may have a digestive upset. Mine all got the runs from eating a can of "fish steaks"--herring, in mustard sauce. My bad.

If it was just a few dark brown droppings, google "cecal poops" and read about that. (normal for chickens)

@ So Lucky The larvae were about the size of large rice grains. Also, the droppings were originally normal. The darkening happened after a few days. It was like they were being composted right there in the coop.

Could be the flies laid eggs on the chicken poo and now your seeing them hatch!
