for the nesting hawk, thats actually a good thing as long as you have plenty of cover for the birds...
hawks are highly territorial, having a nesting pair locally means you wont have to watch for any other hawks or owls!
folks have had good luck with scarecrows moved frequently, hawks wont aproach if they think theres people.
having the dog out there with the chickens will help, especially since hawk got a good taste of the dogs behaviour lol.
and im realy glad you got your arm checked, keep it clean.
i actually work with raptor rehab, ive been raising owls and kestrels since i was very young, and you should NEVER leave a bird of prey wound to "go its course" not only for the bacteria often on their talons but also because its not uncommon for them to do nerve damage when frightend like that and thrashing, they can do serious damage not only in puncture but can tear through and decimate muscle deep down.
glad your feeling better.
dont take the babies out for a few days, and take down any outside bird feeders to discourage hawk form hanging round...
he knows theres food there right now, and will move on if food isnt freely available for a few days.
good luck. they are stunning animals, but certainly pests sometimes!
oh and a tip for keeping hawks out of your trees, remove any snags (dead trees) they love them for "lunch watching" and hang old cds (like the ones aol gives out free) from trees and such, preferably places that they can move around.
hawks dont like the "flashes" of light that these give off and it tends to startle them away.
(deer also dont seem to like them much either!)
