Hello, I am new to BYC and raising Chickens. We got our first Round Heads in Sept., they were 6 mos. when we got them, we are trying to raise them totally free range and got them primarily for Bug Control. We are concerned about predators and think we may have to build coops for protection at night any input on this type of situation would be appreciated.

A warm welcome from an imp in Washington

Congrats on getting chickens.

Depending on where you live and the predator situation in your area, you will almost certainly need a secure coop. Or have losses.

Good luck

I would definatly build a coop for night protection. There are some GREAT coops in the Coop section. You should check it out

from MN. My chickens are more pets than anything and I would hate to lose any of them. I would build a coop for nighttime roosting at least even if you totally freerange during the day. If you do, you need to keep them in there for a few day so they know where home is.
