So finally found someone to trade my 6 cornish x's for chicken (pets). Husband was upset that I came home with 9!....pair of bantams...I believe he said bantam rocks? they are gray..very small 3 days old... 4 mixes...they are buff I believe he said rhode island red & someother mix....2 black cochins( I believe)....I am very very new to chickens & he was talking very fast & wasnt to willing to answer many of my questions. He said he had an old trick to determine chick sex but he couldnt be 100 percent sure...so he tried to give me pairs....he held them between his 2 fingers by their neck lightly & he said the ones that just hung there & didnt put up a fight were hens the ones that were trying to claw ur fingers & put up a fight were roosters... has anyone else heard this? also. one of my bantam chicks has bloody poop!!!!

Bloody poop could mean cocci. Treat with corid in water for 5-7 days.

That sexing method really only works 50% of the time.

I'm new too, and loving this experience!

Well first of all Congratulations on the new babies!!

Without a pic it's hard to help determine breeds, so I will take your word on that part

hehe

If you go to the BYC Home link at the top of the page, there is a ton of information on raising chicks. So if you hubby won't answer you, then it's time to research yourself. You can also ask us any questions that you have

Ok now for the bloody poop. That kinda concerns me. This is a link to "the poop chart" ( http://www.chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0 ) Please take a look as the pictures (yeah it's kinda gross, but it's nessesary) ASAP.

Sometimes intestines will shed and appear a bit "bloody" or tissue-y If that is what your chick has, it's normal. But if you scroll down on the link you will see the "non-normal poops" and under it you will see Coccidiosis poops. That is VERY contagious and can be lethal. Here is yet another link that will tell you more about Coccidiosis and treatment of it. http://www.thepoultrysite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=961

Good luck to you!

Ah thank you! I have never had to deal with this diesese (knock on wood) and wasn't positive of the treatment!

Sure. Sulmet also works, and you can get it from Jeffers within two days of ordering, I believe. Both have worked for me. Sulmet is cheaper, though Corid seems to be the main choice.
