I am just getting started also. Am ordering a coop and reading information with hopes of making this a new, successful adventure. Looking forward to gathering and sharing fresh eggs
Hello Sue, and welcome to BYC! Glad you joined.
What coop are you ordering? Be forewarned that any literature accompanying the coop will state a maximum number of birds that is about TRIPLE what the coop should actually house. The standard rule of thumb for square footage for a coop (NOT including nest box space) is 3.5-4 sq ft. You also need about 1 linear foot of roost space per bird.
And most importantly of all LOTS of ventilation to prevent respiratory issues and frostbite if you live in a cold climate.
Hi there! Please listen to Dobie lover, prefabs are frequently a horrible way to start your chicken keeping venture. they also aren't predator proof. You need one square foot of ventilation per bird, 1 linear foot per bird, 4 square feet in the coop per bird, 1 nest box per 4 hens, and at least 10 feet of run space per bird.
