Check out the breeds that may interest you first. Then decide the egg production varieties you would want. Have a coop or barn, feed, water containers, nesting boxes, fencing, etc. ready before getting any chickens
 
Hi Cortney I am from Dallas too. Same situation going on over here, we got our first 7 chicks at Chickenville USA hatchery, friendly people and beautiful baby chicks, we got 2 Orpingtons, 2 blue barredrocks an 3 barred rocks, we want them for eggs and eventually meat, also friendly because we have toddlers. Wish you the best on your journey.
