Hello everyone,
I have been thinking about getting some chickens for a year now. Last spring my sister-in-law and I got some books and talked about how we could make it a joint project. I looked into how to build a coop and then it was summer and we thought no more of it. I told her last week the local Farm and Home store advertised chicks and I was going to take my grandchildren this weekend to pick out some birds. I was researching each breed first for temperament then for their egg laying. Long story short, She showed up today with a box of birds for me. I just love my surprise But I am not sure if I can keep these breeds in the same coop. Or if my rooster will mate with all the hens. Or what to expect once they get out into a coop. Please any and all information and advice is welcome.
Here is what I have
Black Jersey Giants 2 hens
Easter eggers 3 hens
Cherry eggers, production reds or whatever 2 hens and 1 rooster
I am very happy to have found this site and look forward to learning as much as I can. I have spent a lot of time on this site the last few days and there are so many people here with so much knowledge. I am just so excited.

Welcome and you will find a lot of info and help on this forum. I have learned a lot in 3 months. My question is do you have your coop built yet? You won't believe how fast they grow and need room. This is my first time with chickens also.

! Happy you joined us! I've never had Jerseys but I know a lot of folks really like them. I think as newborn chicks being raised together you won't have much of an issue of them getting along. I have a mixed flock of 12 or so varieties that get along well. The only thing I wonder is the size of the JG compared to the rest but as I say, raised together you should be okay. Good luck to you and enjoy your flock!

No the coop is not ready.I really want to try and make one with as much salvaged wood as I can for many reasons. Budget being number one then my love for just making something new something old. I love to re-purpose and reuse. I was doing that long before it became popular. What kind of chickens do have?

We have 2 leghorns, not sure if they are boys or girls yet. 1 RIR (rhode island red), 3 amber links (these 4 supposed to be pullets), and 2 SLW (silver laced wyandottes, one of which we are almost certain is a boy, dangit!).

We used a lot of pallets for our construction, found one a bit bigger than 4x8 for the floor, and others for the side. Re-purposed!
The last picture is from April 1st. Chickens have moved in,less than 5 weeks after we got them. They grow quick! Needed more room in the house than we had, there was no dedicated room for them. And the feed is smelly.

That is just awesome Too Fast! I picked up a few pallets a couple days ago and plan on going today where they sometimes have large crates and pallets with sheets of plywood on them. I will have pictures of my progress. And you are right about that feed. My babies should be good inside for about 8 weeks unless those jersey giants grow super fast. Here are a couple pictures of mine.

One of the Jerseys imprinted on my son. Too bad he was only here for the day. I hope she doesn't miss him too much.

Cody all cuddled up with the girls!
