hello... been thinking about a few hens for years and now that my daughter is turning the ripe old age of 10 I think we are ready... Ive been reading up... we bought a little coup that I'm pretty sure will house 3 or 4 girls comfortably... based on build quality for a couple years.... if thigs go well we will surely expand. we are readying a safe area for them when they aren't wandering our land... thats about 20x20 fenced and protected from wildlife preditors... we have 20 acres of forestry land but about 4 acres of grassy garden and less wooded area to peck around in... little did I know when we started building this little chicken area that Covid would make everyone a Chick raiser... so we are no longer debating on what types of birds but.rsther what can we get in time for a birthday. I HABE EVERYTING I need for a little brooding station in one of our bathrooms... what are your thoughts on how to find local reputable bird breeders. GOOGLE IT AND ITS ALL MAIL ORDER WITH A 10 CHICK MIN ORDER months out... and the coup we have says its for 6 but I am thinking 4 at most... I have till June 1 to make or break the birthday girls day... I dont think she had a empty coup and broader set up in mind.

First to answer your question, do you have anyone local that sells farm fresh eggs? They may hatch their own and might be able to help you out. If you have any neighbors that are also interested you could buy a batch and split them when they arrive.

A slight concern, please do not go by how many chickens a coop says it will hold, my personal theory is that they chucked chickens in them until they couldn't squeeze any more in and then subtracted 1 to get those measurements. I have a coop in my backyard that says it is good for 2 standard chickens or 4 bantams, I have 1 pigeon in it and I feel bad because he doesn't even have room to spread his wings unless he faces in a certain direction. I wouldn't put even 1 standard chicken in that coop.

This would get more attention if it were in the New Member Introductions section https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/new-member-introductions.44/ and I will ask a mod to move it to that section so that all of our great greeters can meet you and get you started.

If the package stated 6 birds for your coop, I'd assume 2 or 3 tops. Chickens require 4 sq ft per bird in the coop and 12 sq ft MINIMUM, 15 is better, in the run.

Hello and welcome! Congratulations on your decision to get chickens. They are so much fun. You can order as few as three chicks on some of the online hatcheries like Meyers and MyPetChickens...though they are selling out of chicks really fast. Might want to check FB for local chicken groups,which often have leads for chicks. And there’s always Craigslist.
