Hi everyone! Do you guys still do these intros?
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our first chickens early 2023 and have had 105 chickens in our home in that time. Literally in, as I brooded all but 8 (purchased as already laying hens) of them in my dining room.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I Now have only 26, due to a series of events.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Our first round of chicks were Freedom Ranger meat birds, I loved them and learned so much with those fast growing buggers. Currently I have 10 Buff Orpingtons, 5 Lavender Orpingtons, 2 Cream Legbars, 8 barnyard mix (all sired by the sweetest Bielefelder) and a Blue Cochin roo to rule the roost. We recently had to put down our Majestic Maran (Black Copper Maran × Barred Rock). I've only lost 6 chickens, 4 to unknown factors, 2 to some sort of predator (1 possibly to my dog
). But my most devastating loss were my 2 precious Toulouse goslings.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I've loved all the stages of raising chickens so far! I have great appreciation for each life we get to nurture and their wonderful personalities. Seeing them run across the property when I call them is probably my favorite, they are the sweetest group I've met. Growing up with distant chickens
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I make most our food from scratch, but baking bread is my favorite. I love to crochet when I have the time, no matter how infrequent that is.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm a stay at home mom, I run most aspects of the farm. My husband builds my structures and only shakes his head when I decided to start incubating eggs for the first time in November in Indiana.
